How We Transformed Our Home with SGS Engineering DIY Tools – A Review

Posted on August 12, 2025September 11, 2025 By Becky

Seeveral years ago, I shared our big, slightly overwhelming list of DIY dreams for our new home. Back then, we’d just moved in, armed with Pinterest boards, grand ideas, and a healthy dose of optimism. Fast forward to today, and we’ve tackled most of that list (plus a few unexpected extras), learned a lot when it comes to DIY dos and don’ts, and discovered that the right DIY tools really can make all the difference.

For us, that meant turning to SGS Engineering for pretty much everything from heavy-duty drills to storage solutions. They’ve been our go-to for quality kit that doesn’t breakdown after a few uses. While the vast majority of our experiences have been brilliant, and we’ve had fast delivery every time, I’m aware from chatting to other DIYers (and reading reviews) that some people have had hiccups with returns and customer service, so I’ll share a few of those insights here too.

Here’s what we’ve achieved, and what you can perhaps expect from SGS Engineering…

The Kitchen Knock-Through & Renovation

One of our biggest jobs was opening up the kitchen/diner by removing the wall that separated the two spaces. It instantly made the room lighter, bigger, and more sociable.

SGS Tool of Choice: SGS Hammer Drill – It handled everything from stubborn wall fixings to prepping for the skylights like an absolute champ. The power was exactly what we needed for a job of this scale, and it never once felt like it was struggling.

We weren’t the only ones impressed – one SGS customer described their tools as “a beast” that chopped through tough materials without hesitation.

Result: A bright, open kitchen with our dream layout – and no more lilac cupboards.

Reshaping the Garden

Our original garden was a 4-tiered workout just to get from one end to the other. Now it’s three big, usable levels. The back tier is a kid’s paradise with a trampoline and climbing frame, while the front is our artificial grass ‘grown-up’ zone for BBQs and lazy evenings.

SGS Tool of Choice: SGS Cordless Drill Driver – Perfect for assembling the climbing frame and securely fixing the new railway sleepers. Light enough for long jobs, but with enough power to get through hardwood sleepers without breaking a sweat. We’ve also used the drill driver to make some useful-yet-attractive pallet furniture for our garden, so we’ve definitely got our money’s worth from it!

Online, plenty of SGS users echo our experience, praising their tools for being “excellent value for home use” even if they’re not at high-end workshop grade.

Result: A family-friendly space that’s both practical and low-maintenance.

Fencing for Privacy and Security

We swapped wobbly old fence panels for solid, stylish new ones.

SGS Tool of Choice: SGS Impact Driver – A total game-changer compared to a regular drill when it came to driving long screws into the new posts and panels.

One reviewer mentioned their 52 cc SGS strimmer “chops through everything”  and while we didn’t need that particular beast for the fencing, it sums up our experience: SGS tools just get the job done.

Result: A sturdier, smarter-looking boundary, and fewer peeks from next door’s dogs.

The Shed-Office Conversion

With no spare room for a home office, the shed was the next best thing. After insulating, adding power, and giving it a proper paint job, it’s now a cosy little workspace.

SGS Tool of Choice: SGS Mitre Saw – Essential for clean, accurate cuts when fitting the insulation and panelling. And their Tool Chest now keeps everything organised so we don’t lose screws halfway through a job.

Extra Help: SGS 24L Air Compressor – This was a surprisingly handy addition for the finishing touches. We used it with a nail gun to quickly and securely fix skirting boards and interior cladding without splitting the wood. It was also brilliant for blowing away sawdust from hard-to-reach corners before painting, which meant a smoother finish. I’d always thought of compressors as more of a ‘professional workshop’ tool, but this SGS compressor has earned a permanent place in our DIY arsenal.

Result: A quiet, comfortable spot to work (and occasionally hide from the chaos indoors).

What we liked about using SGS Engineering tools for DIY Projects (and What to Keep in Mind)

After years of using SGS Engineering tools across different projects, a few things stand out for us:

  • Quality – Everything we’ve bought has been solid and reliable.

  • Range – Whether you’re hanging a picture or knocking down a wall, there is a tool for every need.

  • Value – Professional performance without ridiculous price tags.

  • Fast Delivery – Every order has arrived quickly, often next-day.

That said, some customers have reported slower response times and hiccups when it comes to returns or warranty claims, particularly for larger equipment like tool cabinets. It’s worth reading their returns policy before ordering, and, as with any big-ticket tool purchase, keeping photos and receipts handy in case you need them.

Looking back at that old list, I’m proud of how much we’ve achieved, and grateful we invested in tools that made the process quicker, safer, and less stressful. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY-er or (like us) learning as you go, having the right kit is worth every penny!

If you’re planning your own renovation projects, take a look at SGS Engineering – they’re definitely our go-to when looking for the best tool brands for DIY projects.
