What Swimming Skills Should Children Learn First?

Posted on August 24, 2026 By Becky

Learning to swim is a gradual process, and children do not need to master advanced techniques straight away. The first lessons should focus on helping them become comfortable in the water while developing basic movements and safety skills. Once these foundations are established, children can gradually progress to more advanced swimming techniques.

For parents enrolling their children in kids swimming lessons, understanding which skills should come first can make the learning process easier to follow and support.

1. Getting Comfortable in the Water

Before learning specific swimming techniques, children need to become familiar with being in the water. They may initially feel uncertain about splashing, floating, or having water near their face.

Simple activities such as playing in the water, splashing, and moving with support can help children become more comfortable. This familiarity creates a better foundation for learning other skills.

2. Safe Pool Entry and Exit

Knowing how to enter and leave a pool safely is an important early skill. Children should learn that they should not enter the water without appropriate supervision and should understand how to use pool edges safely.

Practising safe entry and exit also helps children become more aware of their surroundings and develop responsible habits around water.

3. Breathing Control

Learning how to manage breathing is an important part of swimming. Children need to understand when to breathe and how to remain comfortable when their face is near or in the water.

Beginners may start with simple activities such as blowing bubbles before progressing to more controlled breathing techniques. These exercises help children become familiar with breathing while swimming.

4. Floating

Floating is one of the most useful skills for beginners. Learning to float helps children understand how water supports their body and allows them to practise staying calm.

Children may first practise floating with instructor or parent support before gradually becoming more independent. Learning different floating positions can also improve body awareness and balance.

5. Kicking

Kicking is a basic movement used in many swimming strokes. Children can begin by practising simple leg movements while holding onto the pool edge or using appropriate swimming equipment.

As their coordination improves, they can practise kicking while moving through the water. This helps develop leg strength and introduces the idea of using controlled movements to move forward.

6. Arm Movements

Once children become comfortable with basic kicking, they can begin learning simple arm movements. Reaching, pulling, and pushing through the water help children understand how their arms contribute to forward movement.

Combining arm and leg movements takes practice, so children should be given plenty of opportunities to repeat these skills.

7. Changing Body Position

Children should gradually learn how to move between different positions in the water. Being able to transition from standing to floating or from floating back to an upright position helps develop control and awareness.

These skills can also contribute to water safety by helping children understand how to regain a comfortable position in the water.

8. Moving Short Distances

Once children have developed basic control, they can begin combining their skills to move short distances. Kicking, arm movements, breathing, and body positioning can be practised together.

Starting with short distances allows children to focus on technique without becoming tired or overwhelmed. As their ability improves, the distance can gradually increase.

9. Basic Water Safety Skills

Swimming education should include more than stroke development. Children should also learn important safety behaviours, such as listening to instructions, recognising pool boundaries, and understanding that swimming without adult supervision is unsafe.

These lessons help children develop responsible attitudes around water from an early age.

10. Progressing at the Child’s Own Pace

Every child develops swimming skills differently. Some children may quickly become comfortable in the water, while others may need more time before they are ready to progress.

For younger children, baby swim programs can introduce basic water familiarity, movement, floating, and interaction in an age-appropriate way. These early experiences can make the transition into more advanced swimming lessons easier as children grow.

Final Thoughts

The first swimming skills should focus on creating a strong foundation rather than rushing children into advanced strokes. Water confidence, safe entry and exit, floating, kicking, breathing, and basic movement are all important building blocks.

With regular practice and appropriate guidance, children can gradually combine these skills and develop stronger swimming abilities. The aim is not simply to teach children how to move through water, but to help them become capable, confident, and aware swimmers.
