Taking Your Blog to the Next Level Right Now

Posted on September 18, 2024 By Becky

Run a blog? Filled wit with lots of witty musings and helpful advice? Want to take it to the next level and gather even more loyal followers than you already have? Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Master the Art of Storytelling

If you want people to get really sucked in by your writing and enjoy your blog on a whole new level then you need to get better at storytelling. It does not matter how interesting the ideas you have are, if you cannot weave them into a thrilling and coherent narrative, they are never going to grab attention and go viral. But, if you can bring those ideas to live by weaving a narrative that is compelling, funny and ultimately satisfying, well that is a whole different story (pun very much intended).

How do you get better at storytelling? By practising. Keep writing things down and fiddling with them until they sound more intriguing and have a better structure, and you will absolutely get there in the end, and it will make your blog better.

  1. Upgrade Your Visuals

The written word may be your thing but here’s the thing; these days most people who log on and look for content enjoy photos and videos even more than writing (thank you, TikTok). That means that if you are serious about taking your blog to the next level, you are going to want to make your space on the internet more visual than ever before.

How do you do this? Start by taking more of your own photos to go alongside your writing, so that it is less generic and more visually interesting, You may also want to start making videos where you read your cogent instead of just having it in the written form. You could also invest in a GoPro to take impressive aerial shots to accompany your travel posts, for example. There’s no right or wrong way to do it as long as you include more visuals on your blog, and make them as interesting as they can be.

  1. Nail Your Niche (And Don’t Be Afraid to Go Deep)

It’s tempting to be a jack of all trades when it comes to blogging, but the truth is, readers love specialists. If you’re blogging about everything under the sun, it can be hard to build a dedicated following. Instead, focus on your niche, and don’t be afraid to go deep on the topics you’re passionate about.

Are you obsessed with sustainable fashion? Lean into it and become the go-to source for all things eco-friendly style. Love tech gadgets? Your audience will thank you if you drill down into the nitty-gritty of the latest gadgets (and, of course, use your GoPro to film some cool tech reviews).

By honing in on your niche, you’re not only making it easier for your audience to know what to expect from you, but you’re also positioning yourself as an expert. And experts attract loyal, engaged readers who are more likely to share your content and come back for more.

  1. Take the Next Step with SEO

If we’re honest, SEO, for most of us, is about as exciting as watching beige paint dry, but it’s a necessary evil if you want to grow your blog. If you want people to find your blog via Google (and you do), you need to optimise your posts for search engines.

Luckily, SEO doesn’t have to be a nightmare. There are a few simple things you can do to make your blog more search-friendly:

  • Keywords: Do a little research and find out what keywords your audience is searching for. Incorporate these keywords naturally into your blog posts, but don’t go overboard—no one likes reading something that sounds like a robot wrote it.
  • Headings and Subheadings: Use clear, descriptive headings and subheadings (like the ones in this post) to help search engines understand the structure of your content.
  • Internal and External Links: Link to your own relevant blog posts (internal links) and reputable external sources to boost your SEO. It helps search engines crawl your site and improves your authority on the topic.

It’s not glamorous, but spending a little time on SEO can make a big difference in how much traffic you’re getting from search engines. And once the visitors start rolling in, all your hard work will be worth it.

  1. Collaborate with Other Bloggers

Blogging doesn’t have to be a solo sport. One of the best ways to grow your audience is by collaborating with other bloggers in your niche. Guest posting on each other’s sites, hosting joint giveaways, or even just giving each other shoutouts on social media can help you reach new readers who are already interested in your type of content.

Look for bloggers who have a similar (or slightly larger) following to yours, and don’t be afraid to reach out with a friendly message. Most bloggers are happy to support each other, and a good collaboration can benefit everyone involved.

Plus, let’s be honest: it’s always more fun when you’re not going it alone.

  1. Embrace Social Media Authentically

If you want to take your blog to the next level, you can’t ignore social media. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and even TikTok can be powerful tools for promoting your blog and growing your audience. But here’s the thing: social media is full of influencers, bloggers, and brands shouting for attention, so it’s important to keep it real.

Post regularly, but don’t feel the need to share every little detail of your life. Engage with your followers, reply to comments, and make sure your personality shines through. Your blog is unique, and so are you—so let that come across in your social media posts.

And don’t forget to use your blog content as inspiration for social posts. Turn a new blog post into an Instagram Story, a Pinterest Pin, or a Twitter thread. Repurposing your content across different platforms helps you reach a wider audience without having to create something new from scratch.

  1. Engage with Your Readers

It’s easy to get so focused on creating content that you forget the most important part of blogging: your readers. If you want your blog to grow, you need to build a relationship with your audience. Reply to comments, ask questions, and encourage your readers to share their thoughts. When people feel like they’re part of a community, they’re more likely to stick around and become loyal followers.

You can also consider starting an email newsletter to keep your readers up-to-date on new blog posts, upcoming projects, and exclusive content. It’s a great way to stay connected with your audience and keep them coming back for more.

  1. Experiment and Have Fun

Blogging shouldn’t feel like a chore—it should be fun! If you’re getting bored with your content or feel like you’re in a creative rut, mix things up. Experiment with new formats, like videos, podcasts, or interviews. Try a new writing style or explore a different angle in your niche.

The beauty of blogging is that it’s your space. You can make it whatever you want it to be. So don’t be afraid to take risks, try new things, and have fun with it. Your readers will appreciate your authenticity, and you’ll feel more inspired to keep going.

Building an even better blog, as you can see, is actually pretty easy, and if you do the above, it is sure to be effective, so what are you waiting for?
