Keep Your Family Home Safe With These Tips

Protecting family is the most important thing in the world. We can do many things in life to ensure the safety of the ones we love in different aspects of their lives, but today we want to focus on the home specifically.

Today we want to take a look at some of the different ways that you can make the home safe and secure for every member of your family this year.

Get doors with deadlocks

When we think of deadlocks a lot of us think about sci-fi shows, however deadlocks are actually an important part of our homes. If you can find external doors that have deadlocks you can ensure the safety of all of the family.

Install a baby gate

If you have a pet dog, the best thing you can do in the home for their own safety is install a baby gate. The reason we mention a baby gate and not a pet gate is because baby gates are cheaper and will provide the same function. When you are out of the house close the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs and this will stop your dog getting upstairs and potentially hurting themselves.

Take your keys with you

We all have spare keys to the house and it is a helpful thing to have if we ever need to give a family member or neighbour access while away. However, it is not a good idea for you to leave your house keys in the house when you go out. Always take every set of keys with you and this will prevent someone being able to steal and copy your keys while you are gone.

Get lockable windows

As a parent there is always a fear that your child will hurt themselves while you are out of the house, and the windows in particular are a danger point. If you want to keep the kids and your pets safe, install lockable windows and always keep the windows locked and keys hidden somewhere safe.

Secure cleaning products

For children and cats in particular there is a huge attraction to brightly coloured bottles such as bleach and window cleaner, and of course these items are highly toxic to children and animals. When putting items away in your cupboards always be sure that lids are screwed on tightly and locked, and that you are able to keep these items out of reach.

Install an alarm system

Most homes these days have some sort of alarm system and a system such as  rapid alarms can create a real sense of security in your home. It is important for you to consider adding some cameras to the perimeter of your home because these will act as a great deterrent for burglars.

Use a Ring doorbell

A Ring doorbell is one that has a video camera and a microphone and links to an app on your phone. When someone rings the bell you will be able to see who it is wherever you are and this will allow you to make sure delivery men place your parcel in a safe place and people coming to visit know where you are. It can also ensure that scammers are deterred and burglars are caught as any motion close to the front door will set off a notification on the app.

Put newspapers on hold when you go away

The reason that this is so crucial in the overall security of your home is that robbers will look for houses that have a surplus of uncollected mail and milk over a period of time and they will target these houses because they are left empty. Always put any deliveries like these on hold when you go on holiday and it will ensure that you don’t get taken advantage of.

Ask a neighbour to park in your drive

Another helpful trick for the security of your home when you go on holiday is to ask a neighbour with multiple cars to park one up your drive. This is a great way to throw a robber off the scent and make them think someone is in the home.

Have timered lights

There are a few ways to ensure that you put on the facade of being at home when you are away and this is a great one. Use a timered plug or a smart bulb such as Philips Hue to turn on the lights at different intervals during the day in order to keep the robbers at bay.
