Do You Need To Change The Layout Of Your Kitchen During A Remodel?

Posted on September 21, 2021 By Becky

When you are remodelling your kitchen, you need to decide whether to change the layout or not. You could just replace the units and appliances and add new flooring and countertops without making any changes to the layout. Alternatively, you could rip it all out and start moving things around. You could even add an island or dining area if you have the space. But changing the layout is more work and it’ll be more expensive, so you shouldn’t just do it for the sake of it. The question is, how do you decide whether it’s worth changing the layout or not? Consider these questions to help you make a decision.

Is The Layout Easy To Use?

One of the main reasons to change your kitchen layout is if it isn’t very easy to use. If you cannot reach the cupboards easily, they are not properly organized or you have difficulty moving around in there, then it’s time for a change. If the oven, refrigerator and sink are all spread out, it’s a pain to cook in there. Ideally, you should follow the kitchen triangle layout, to some extent. So, if your kitchen layout is poorly designed and you have a love-hate relationship with the space, it might be time for a change.

Do You Have A Big Budget?

If you have a big budget, you might be able to justify changing the layout. It will allow you to redesign the kitchen and make it more functional for your needs. So, if your kitchen is not right or it’s too small then ripping everything out and starting again may be the way forward. However, if you are trying to do it on a small budget, you should consider getting kitchen cupboard replacement doors and some new appliances instead of ripping it all out and starting from scratch. If the layout is usable and you don’t have a huge amount of money to spend, it’s best to leave it as it is.

Have Your Needs Changed?

If your needs have changed, it might be time to change the layout of your kitchen. For example, if you have started a family or you have a young child, there are certain elements of the kitchen that will need to change. You may want to add a family dining area, for example. An older couple may not need as many cupboards either. The layout should fit with your current lifestyle and needs. If you do not need as much storage space for example, then changing the layout might be a good idea. If it’s workable and you don’t need to make any changes, then it’s best to leave it.

Is There A Better Alternative Layout?

Before you start pulling everything out, think about whether there is actually a better alternative. If you are working with a small kitchen space or an awkwardly shaped room, there might not be a better way to arrange things. There is no sense spending money changing the layout if the new layout is going to be equally as bad. If this is the case, you might need to look at other options like extensions or knocking walls through.

Altering the kitchen layout is a big job to take on, so think carefully about whether you really need to change it or not.
