When it’s time to move, setting up utilities is crucial to ensure a smooth transition. However, there are some steps that homeowners often forget because of how busy they are preparing for the move, and this can cause issues in the future. Instead, take the time to do all of the following to avoid making any mistakes. 

Forgetting to Schedule All Utilities for Turn On

It is never fun to get to the new house, realize that all of the utilities aren’t on, and then find out that it will take a few days for them to be turned on. Instead, homeowners should prepare by scheduling everything to be turned on ahead of time, so everything is ready when they move in. This includes electricity, gas if needed, internet from HyperFiber, and more. 

Not Letting Current Providers Know About the Move

Homeowners may not think about notifying the current utility companies until right before the move, but it is a good idea to let them know well ahead of time. It’s recommended to call them at least two weeks before the move to schedule a turn-off date and get information about how to receive or pay the final bill from the provider. 

Not Noting Meter Readings Before Leaving and When Arriving

It’s a good idea to write down the readings for the meters before leaving to make sure they are close to or the same as the readings on the final bill. It’s also a good idea to write down the numbers on meters before moving in, if possible, to make sure the first bill doesn’t cover any time before the move-in date. Homeowners can often check the meters on their own to get the current readings. 

Not Transferring Utilities Where Possible

Depending on how far the person is moving and other details, it may be possible to transfer utilities instead of ending the old one and starting a new one. This can help homeowners avoid contracts or needing to pay a new deposit, and it can make the transition a lot easier to handle. It is a good idea to always look into what utilities can be transferred. 

Not Remembering to Check for Deposits

Some utility companies will require new customers to pay a deposit. The amount for the deposit can vary significantly, so it is important to know what it is and plan for it before scheduling the utilities to be turned on. Homeowners will want to check this ahead of time so they can avoid any surprises when they’re ready to move. 

Not Double-Checking Final Bills Before Leaving

It’s never a good idea to just pay the final bill after moving out without checking it first. Make sure the readings on the bill, as well as the stop date, match the homeowner’s records, and make sure there aren’t any surprise fees added on. If there was initially a deposit paid, it is a good idea to check to see if the deposit was returned or taken out of the final bill.
