How to store valuables safely at home

Posted on October 9, 2025 By Becky

When it comes to storing your valuables at home, the task may seem straightforward: simply put them away and forget about them. But with precious items like engagement rings or heirlooms, you need to consider more than just tucking them out of sight.

Safeguarding them involves careful planning and a bit of strategy. Here are some ways you can protect your possessions, even when you’re not around.

  1. Secure the perimeter of your home

No matter how clever your storage system is, if someone can easily enter your home, the rest of your efforts will be in vain.

Start by reinforcing entry points like windows and doors, which are common access points for burglars. Simple upgrades, such as installing sturdy deadbolts, security cameras, motion-sensor lighting, or a smart doorbell, can allow you to screen visitors more efficiently.

  1. Use a high-quality home safe

A reliable safe not only protects against theft but also shields your valuables from other risks, such as fire or water damage. For items like engagement rings or important documents, look for a safe that’s both fire-resistant and waterproof. A safe with a strong locking mechanism and advanced features, such as biometric or keypad entry, ensures that only authorised individuals can access it.

  1. Think like a burglar

To truly secure your valuables, you need to get into the mindset of someone trying to steal them. For example, don’t leave expensive jewellery out in plain sight, even if you’re just stepping out for a short period. Consider placing items that might be tempting to a burglar in discreet spots like a false-bottom drawer or a hidden compartment within your wardrobe.

Additionally, burglars often target homes when they believe no one is home. Try not to post on social media and consider using timers on lights or leaving a car in the driveway to make your home appear occupied.

documents

  1. Document and insure your valuables

Even with the best physical security measures, it’s important to keep a detailed inventory in case you ever need to make a claim. Many home insurance policies will cover valuable items, but some, especially expensive jewellery, may need to be specifically listed and insured separately.

By documenting each item and getting it professionally appraised, you ensure that your insurance coverage is adequate. For example, an engagement ring might be a high-ticket item, and without proper documentation, you might find yourself underinsured if anything happens to it. Always review your policy to ensure that it reflects the true value of your possessions.

Ultimately, securing your valuables is an investment in your well-being. The more effort you put into keeping them safe, the less you’ll need to worry. Over time, these precautions will become second nature, offering you a lasting sense of security in knowing you’ve taken the right steps to protect what matters most to you.
