The Nutritional Support For Seniors With Swallowing Difficulties

Posted on December 5, 2024 By Becky

Dysphagia is a condition that affects many seniors today. They have difficulty swallowing foods or liquids. Several underlying diseases may lead to this common condition, and increasing age is also a risk factor. These men and women must spend more time eating, which takes a lot of effort. A diet designed specifically for their needs can help them eat healthily.

Swallowing Disorders and Their Challenges

Before a person can begin treating dysphagia, they must understand what it means when somebody says they have difficulty swallowing. This individual may cough or gag when they swallow or have pain when they try to move foods and liquids down their throat. Frequent heartburn, weight loss, regurgitation, and drooling are all symptoms seen with swallowing disorders.

These disorders can lead to complications for an individual. Weight loss is only one concern, as they may choke or struggle with aspiration pneumonia. Malnutrition and dehydration are also concerns. An individual must be properly tested to receive the correct diagnosis. A treatment plan can be developed once the underlying cause has been determined.

Dysphagia Diets

A dysphagia diet can help individuals struggling with a swallowing disorder maintain a healthy weight and remain hydrated. Many people rely on the National Dysphagia Diet, which has existed for some time. However, newer guidelines have been issued. The International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative will make it easier for people to travel and follow the diet.

Fluid Consistency

Fluid consistency is a significant part of the National Dysphagia Diet.  Slightly thick liquids have the consistency of nectar. They will coat and drip off a spoon or flow through a straw. Mildly thick liquids are the consistency of honey. When they flow off the spoon, it will look more like a ribbon. A person will have difficulty drinking this liquid from a straw. Pudding thick liquids lose shape as they’re slowly poured off the spoon. A person can sip this liquid, which is moderately thick or liquidized.

Rating System

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative rates foods based on their texture and thickness. Several testing methods can determine a food or liquid’s rating. The fork drip test rates a food or liquid based on how well it holds together when on the prongs of a fork.

The spoon tilt test determines a food’s stickiness and ability to hold together. The fork or spoon pressure test and chopstick tests measure a food’s texture by seeing how it changes when pressure is applied using a fork’s prongs or the back of a spoon. Chopsticks may be used if a fork and spoon are unavailable. The flow test tests drinks or liquid foods using a syringe to determine how quickly they flow.

Working With a Dietitian

Seniors with a swallowing disorder should work with a geriatric dietitian to find a diet that meets their nutritional needs. The dietitian will also help this individual prevent aspiration pneumonia and other complications seen with swallowing disorders. They will create an optimized meal plan to increase intake.  The dietitian guides the senior in choosing foods and liquids that can be consumed with a swallowing disorder, and they will also provide tips and tricks to help seniors maintain their weight and appetite.

As people age, their bodies undergo numerous changes. Some men and women develop swallowing disorders. A dysphagia diet helps them prevent nutritional deficiencies and choose foods and liquids that support their nutritional health. Seniors who follow this diet will have a higher quality of life.
