Face Feeling Dull? Try These Skin-Brightening Products

Posted on December 6, 2024November 18, 2025 By Becky

Have you noticed your skin starting to look a bit dull and lacklustre? Is your skin crying out for some love? Maybe it’s those long hours at the office, city pollution, or the other night when you fell asleep before doing your skincare routine (it’s okay, we’ve all been there!).

Be that as it may, achieving a natural, healthy glow doesn’t require complicated treatments or a complete skincare overhaul. The secret is to understand a few key ingredients that science has proven can help restore your skin’s natural radiance and even out your complexion.

But not all brightening skincare is created equal. To get the best results, look for products that have the following ingredients:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants protect your cells from cell-damaging molecules called free radicals. Free radicals can be the result of environmental stressors like pollution or form from natural body processes.

Vitamin C is a brightening superstar because it diminishes melanin production, fading dark spots, sun spots and hyperpigmentation while also reducing redness. Its free radical fighting nature also protects the skin against photodamage resulting from the sun.

An easy way to incorporate vitamin C into your routine is by using a vitamin C brightening serum.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B-3, a vitamin essential for skin health. It’s a water-soluble vitamin, so you have to either take it as a supplement or apply it topically to reap its benefits. Niacinamide is a wonderful ingredient for the skin. It minimises pores, has anti-inflammatory properties, retains moisture, is often used for treating acne and, of course, brightens. It lightens existing dark spots and prevents new ones from forming. Like vitamin C, niacinamide helps protect the skin from pollution.

Niacinamide is used in everything from serums and creams to cleansers. It can easily be paired with vitamin C for a brightening one-two punch.

Arbutin

Arbutin is a hydroquinone derivative and a widely used ingredient in skin-brightening products. Arbutin occurs naturally in the leaves and bark of many plants, such as blueberries and cranberries. It reduces hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase (an enzyme which controls melanin production) production. Arbutin creates glowy and even skin by brightening the skin tone and lightening dark areas and scars.

Arbutin is commonly used in serums and creams.

Liquorice extracts

Liquorice extracts are taken from the roots of the liquorice plant, a herb commonly grown in southern Europe and the Middle East. Liquorice is not just something you can eat but also beneficial for the skin, and has been used for centuries as a skincare ingredient. Liquorice extract is packed with amazing compounds that improve the skin’s condition, from antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to brightening. It is a safer and more natural alternative to hydroquinone.

Liquorice is a powerful ingredient for brightening the skin thanks to the presence of two particular compounds — glabridin and liquiritin. Glabridin inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, reducing hyperpigmentation and age spots. It also works as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radical damage. Liquiritin disperses melanin production, fading existing dark spots and preventing new ones from forming. Liquiritin allows other skin-brightening ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin.

To get the most potent effects out of liquorice extract, use it as a serum. Peppermint oil is also a great natural skincare treatment.

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally found in wheat, rye and barley. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and is used for acne treatment, including rosacea. Azelaic acid is great for treating hyperpigmentation because it also hinders tyrosinase production, so it’s particularly useful for healing melasma, discolouration and acne pigmentation.

Try azelaic acid-infused serums, creams, gels, masks and cleansers for your skin brightening needs.

The ingredients discussed in this article are tried and tested for getting brighter, more even skin.  When it comes to choosing ingredients for your skincare, remember to choose options that are safe, effective, and suitable for your skin type. Remember to always follow the instructions of individual products, and research what can and can’t be used together. It’s a good idea to talk to a skin professional before adding actives into your routine, or changing things up dramatically.

It’s also important to adopt healthy habits for your skin, like wearing sunscreen everyday, staying hydrated, and maintaining a healthy diet. These practices are key in preserving and improving skin brightness over time.

Remember, long term skin health should always be prioritised over quick fixes. Adopt a holistic approach to skin brightening. You’ve got this!
