3 ways to grow your career at home

Posted on May 11, 2022December 16, 2025 By Becky

There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious. It’s good to have goals and to know where you want to go.

But unfortunately, when you’ve been in your job for a long time, you can start to feel stagnant. Opportunities for development can dry up, and sometimes you just need to try your hand at something different.

Boosting your skills will help you make that transition from your current job to one you enjoy. Whether you’re working from home and want to make a splash in your industry, have your eyes on a whole new career path, or are simply looking to use your free time to boost your skillset, these are just 3 ways to grow your career at home.

You can also seek career counselling to gain clarity and direction. There are companies that offer the best career counselling in Singapore, as well as in other regions, providing guidance tailored to individual goals and challenges. Professional counsellors help identify strengths, interests, and opportunities, while also suggesting practical steps to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

  1. Freelancing

If you have transferrable professional skills for which there is a freelance demand, this type of work can be a great opportunity.

While it might not lead directly to a stable job, you can do a little freelancing on the side of your full-time role. As well as allowing you to earn, you’ll gain additional experience through your clients that your current position may not offer.

And with experience, a freelance career can be transformed into a full-time venture, giving you the opportunity to do something you love. Typical freelance careers include writing, photography and web design, but if you have specialised skills in a particular industry, you may be able to hire out your expertise as a freelance consultant. Some professionals even take inspiration from small business models such as a carpet cleaning franchise, applying similar principles of flexibility and self-management to build their own independence or career paths. They also move their freelance services into something larger, such as a franchise, as a wider career path for them to choose.

Advertising your skills via sites like Freelancer.com can be a great way to start gaining clients and building a steady flow of work.

  1. Study an online degree

Many of us can train and upskill through our jobs.

But if you feel that you aren’t getting the development opportunities you need, or want to embark on a new career path, studying online can be a flexible way to maintain your fulltime duties without compromising on your own growth. A lot of people think that online courses are all specific to one type of job but there are plenty of soft skills courses that can be an excellent boost for your career and will look fantastic on your CV.

For example, if you wanted to switch career to become a yoga teacher, then an online yoga instructor certification can help you on your way. You might have always wanted to teach yoga but never known how to get a foot in the door, but by taking an online course, you can learn what you need to get started and everything will follow from there.

ARU Distance Learning offer a range of online degrees which can be studied remotely at a time and a place that suits you, allowing you to balance your growth with your current career and commitments.

  1. Grow your network

Communication is one of the biggest challenges of working from home, and it can be hard to stay connected to your colleagues

But not only is it vitally important to be connected to those in your company, it’s good to get to know people within your industry.

You can do this via in-person networking events, which you may be able to access independently or through work, as well as virtual events, which remain increasingly popular post-pandemic. Having an online presence and your own website can also be beneficial, and if you need help to get your own one set up, you can find advice online from YouTube channels like youtube.com/@createwpsite.

Meanwhile, networking platforms like LinkedIn can introduce you to similarly experienced professionals who may lead you to new opportunities – some jobhunters even manage to be talent spotted through the platform.

With these 3 ways to grow your career at home, you can make the most of resources available to you at home to continue your career development at your own time and pace.

Business Degrees That Go Beyond Generic Management Skills

Posted on October 17, 2025June 23, 2026

General business degrees have a reputation problem, and honestly, it’s kind of deserved. A lot of business programs teach the same broad concepts – marketing principles, organizational behavior, financial basics – that don’t translate cleanly into actual job skills. Graduates come out knowing theory but not really how to do…
