The reason for hobbies is that they provide those light reliefs in life that you need to reset or shift focus onto something healthy, or that brings you joy. Just because you’re a parent doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have hobbies, and here’s why. The hidden benefits of hobbies for mums and dads There are many hidden benefits to having a hobby for all of the mummies and daddies out there. These include: It’s a stress relief Hobbies can be a great relief from stress and are the outlets that you might need to help lower your stress levels, particularly if you’re feeling overwhelmed in the workplace or in your home environment. Helps increase confidence Achieving goals within a hobby is helpful for boosting your self-esteem and providing that sense of accomplishment that you might not have acquired for some time. Improving your confidence is something many parents need to reestablish after they become parents, because many of them lose it, particularly mothers. Improves mental health Who doesn’t want to make time for their mental health? We all have it, and we all deal with it differently. Some struggle more than others, and when you become a parent, it’s good to have hobbies that are engaging and reduce those symptoms of depression, anxiety, or low mood in general. Sense of purpose A simple hobby can provide a person with a renewed sense of purpose. A creative outlet for self-expression, both of which are often missing after you become a parent. Ideas for rediscovering your own passions When looking to rediscover your own passions in life, here are some helpful ideas to help with that. Give yourself permission It’s important to give yourself the permission you need to have interests and hobbies. Recognizing that hobbies and interests make you a more interesting and healthy person is important. It also helps both you and your child in life. Allow for grief It’s good to allow time for grief, especially when you become a parent. You’ve lost a big part of your identity, sometimes in its entirety, and that’s something that needs to be processed. It’s ok to feel confused or sad about losing it. Create a list of hobbies to try out A list of hobbies will help kickstart your efforts in redefining who you are and your identity. There are lots of hobbies that you can implement in and around the home. For example, if you enjoyed golf previously but can’t get to the club as often as you’d like, why not bring a golf simulator into your home? There are lots of hobbies to try out, too, if you’ve not tried them before, so start with a list and work your way through it. How a parent’s hobby can inspire the whole family Parents who have hobbies can be incredibly influential to their own kids. It can inspire the whole family, which is why it’s good to have at least one or two hobbies for the sake of inspiring your kids and their own future loves and joys.
