What To Remember About Monetising Your Blog Posted on May 22, 2025 By Becky Monetising a blog is an exciting thing. You’ve reached a point where you can reliably make some money off of your online content, and people are turning up time and time again willing to pay for your thoughts, opinions, and experiences. It’s the kind of online presence everyone wishes they had! But when you put some money making efforts into the bargain, you won’t want to forget about the intricacies that need to be thought about behind the scenes. As such, here are the main things to remember before you set up your blog for long term monetization. Value Matters More Than Ever When monetising online content that was otherwise written for free for a very long time, you need to offer as much value to your visitors as you can. Now they’re going to be incentivizing you to make content, but the quality of this shouldn’t drop just to keep up with your money making efforts. You should also be investing in your own writing skills, storytelling skills, and the experience you offer for the niche you’ve chosen. The more insights you offer that a reader can’t find anywhere else, as well as a style and tone that makes content accessible, the more value will be found in your blog as a whole. And trust us, people don’t mind paying for that! You’ll Have New Tax Obligations New tax obligations can be a scary thing to think about, but they’re often a lot more simple to understand than you first think. You’re probably going to need to scout out some accountants and find one who understands your career and your unique tax needs, but it isn’t too difficult to research the new financial worries you may need to take into account. You may already be aware that whatever money you make, if you earn more than a certain amount in one fiscal year, it needs to be declared on a tax return. You may not be aware though that any foreign income has its own set of regulations, and you could very well be earning USD through your blog instead of GBP. Indeed, you should always speak to a tax advisor when you get the chance to, in order to get specific advice to follow, but plenty of information can be found on the HMRC website as well. There’s More Than One Way to Monetize If you’ve signed up for affiliate links to place throughout your blog posts, great! This is a tried and tested method to make some extra cash off of your readership, and it’s a pretty non-intrusive way of getting your traffic to start paying for itself. However, there’s more than one way to monetize, and it’s best to make use of at least two different methods on a blog. That way, if one method stops paying as well as it usually does, you’ve got another method already set up to lift the slack. Monetising your blog? Keep these things in mind! Blogging Happy 1 Year Bloggversary to me! Posted on October 23, 2014March 22, 2016 Almost one year ago to the day, I set up this little blog. I had previously dabbled, somewhat cluelessly, in the blogging world, back in 2012, using blogger (anyone remember ‘Young, Hip and Homely’? Nah, me neither…).
