What Is Office Syndrome? Posted on June 21, 2024 By Becky Office Syndrome is a modern-day malady caused by spending long hours sitting at a desk working on computers while not using correct posture and proper ergonomics. The symptoms include soreness and inflammation of the back, shoulder, and neck muscles, as well as problems with the hands and arms. If left untreated over time it can lead to even greater physical health issues like pain in the abdomen, and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. If you are someone who feels you are suffering from the ill effects of Office Syndrome it is highly recommended that you seek immediate help from the physical therapy professionals at MT Rehab Clinic, they have a deep understanding of the problems you are facing and can provide you with the tools to overcome them. So you can be better aware, the following is a list of some of the many health conditions you might be facing that Office Syndrome can cause: Postural Back Pain – Poor posture can cause pain and/or discomfort in your back muscles. Patellofemoral Syndrome – ‘Patella’ is Latin for ‘kneecap’. This medical term refers to pain in your knee’s front and around the kneecap. Tendinitis – This condition is caused by inflammation of your tendons. It causes pain in your fingers, wrists, elbows, thighs, as well as other areas of your body that utilize tendons. Myofascial Pain Syndrome – This is a chronic pain disorder caused by pressure on sensitive ‘trigger points’ in your muscles. Muscles such as your shoulder blades, shoulders, and neck, may be affected. Dyspepsia – More commonly known as indigestion, this refers to discomfort and/or pain in your upper abdomen, as well as symptoms such as nausea, discomfort, burping, and bloating. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – This condition happens when the median nerve, one of the major nerves in your hand, is compressed or squeezed as it passes through your wrist, causing numbness, pain, and an unpleasant tingling in your hand, wrist, and sometimes up into your arm. Trigger Finger – This condition most often affects your ring finger and thumb, but it can sometime occur in your other fingers as well. You will experience a catching or locking sensation when you bend of straighten the affected finger, the movement will be delayed then suddenly flip into your intended position. These Office Syndrome symptoms are caused by using your muscles repetitively while maintaining an unhealthy posture while you are working. Not maintaining ergonomically proper desk and chair height ratio and keyboard positioning causes your body to take on unhealthy, unnatural positions like hunching over with rounded shoulders, or slouching. The resulting poor posture causes your core muscles to constantly contract, causing other muscle groups to experience increased tension, thus giving rise to the symptoms listed above. The real cure for Office Syndrome is to learn to sit and work in a proper position using ergonomically designed furniture and office tools, which will prevent the condition from occurring in the first place!
