Whether you are trying to start a new fitness activity or adapt to a healthier lifestyle, sometimes it feels as though your motivation is slipping away underneath you. However, while it’s perfectly fine to give yourself some allowances – for example, you don’t need to work out every day – it’s also important that you can stick to some kind of routine and help towards getting excited about fitness and healthy living.
The easiest way to commit to a healthy routine is by ensuring that you are excited about what you are doing – whether you are heading to an exercise class or thinking about what to have for dinner. And, despite popular misconception – a healthy lifestyle doesn’t need to be dull, restrictive or boring – in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to get excited about fitness and healthy living!
- Find an exercise activity you love. When discussing putting together a workout routine, we often think about attending a local gym. However, while this form of exercise works for some people, it isn’t for everyone – but that doesn’t mean that exercise is off the table. For example, you could participate in home workouts or join a local sports team, such as your local Grassroots rugby club. The latter is incredibly beneficial as it turns exercising into socialising – giving you the chance to get fit while working as part of a team who will motivate you every step of the way.
- Experiment in the kitchen. Healthy eating does not mean that you have to stick to salads every day of the week (though they can be exciting too). Therefore, you can ensure that you stay enthusiastic when it comes to healthy eating by experimenting with a range of different recipes. For example, you can always try and make healthier versions of your favourite takeout dishes!
- Keep it varied. If you want to see real results from your workouts, then you need to be consistent in your approach to exercise. However, this does not necessarily mean that you need to do the same thing every session – as this could quickly become boring and tiresome. Keeping it varied by trying out a variety of different workouts erases this issue completely and gives you something to look forward to. Trying something new is also a great way to step out of your comfort zone.
Set goals & celebrate off-scale wins. While many people choose to transition to a healthier lifestyle in order to lose weight, this should not be your only goal. Instead, you should focus on getting healthier and feeling more comfortable in your skin. That way, you’re less likely to lose motivation if you don’t see immediate results when you look in the mirror. You should also ensure that you celebrate all of your victories – including those that happen off the scale. For example, you may notice that you have more energy each day or enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep instead of waking up multiple times throughout the night.
