Top Tips to achieve a child-friendly garden

Having a child-friendly garden is the perfect way to enjoy the space you have, whilst encouraging your little ones to be active and have fun in the beautiful fresh air. It’s not always necessary to transform your lovely garden into an outdoor play area, but there are ways in which you can make your garden more enjoyable for the kids, whilst still keeping it a peaceful place for you to go and relax. Here are a few top tips on how you can turn your garden into a child-friendly space and give your little ones plenty of reasons to get outside!

Separate Surfaces

One of the most important things to consider when adding some fun space for your children to play is the surfaces they will be playing on. Whilst the grass is perfect for playing sports, reading their favourite book or even playing with their toys, it isn’t the best place to have a water pit or lots of sand. With this in mind, focus on what you want to introduce for your little ones, such as a dedicated paved area for the sand pit and water table, or an area that has some wooden bark spread out for the trampoline or swings. This will help to make a comfortable landing spot should anyone fall over!

A Play Zone

To ensure your garden is the perfect play space, whilst still having enough adult space that is relaxing and comfortable, you need to look at creating zones. A play zone is the ideal way to make a space that has everything your kids have for the garden, keeping it in one area. You could add small fencing to this area to make it clearer that this is the playing space, or you could simply dedicate a certain area of the garden for the toys to stay in. Your social space can then have items such as your outdoor table and seating space, BBQs, outdoor heaters and so on, which you can position away from the child-friendly area. With this layout in place, you will be able to enjoy your relaxing seating space, whilst watching your little ones let their imaginations run wild whilst they play with their favourite toys in their play area.

Garden Toys

It’s not a child-friendly space if it hasn’t got an endless number of exciting toys to play with. The beauty of having your very own garden is that you can create your very own playground in the comfort of your own home, so you don’t have to worry about travelling to the park. Introducing some fun outdoor toys such as a swing set, seesaw, swing-ball and toy cars will provide your kids with hours of fun. You can also look at adding some other exciting items such as a playhouse for them to be creative with, and even a trampoline to let them bounce their energy away. Find out what your children want to have outside to play with and create a fun space that they can enjoy for hours at a time.

Ways to Help

Young children always want to be involved with adult situations, such as gardening, so it’s really beneficial to invest in some cute little gardening tools for your little ones, so that they can help with your projects. Whether It’s pulling out the nasty weeds, helping to water the flowers or digging a hole for some seeds, you can have a little assistant to help you do your work, which in turn will help them focus on the task in hand, learn new skills and also gain a sense of self-achievement!

Try cultivating mushrooms using grow kits to let your little participate in gardening. Grow kits are easy to set up and don’t need a lot of maintenance or space so you can let your little one be in charge of taking care of them. Do make sure to monitor the progress of your indoor mushroom garden as they can grow pretty quickly.  

Add Some Shade

Something else to consider is helping your children stay safe while they are out in the garden. Children love being outside, unfortunately so does the sun. With the harmful rays, you can only do so much to protect them. This includes using the right clothing, applying sunscreen, and finding shade where possible. How about you add some shade to your garden so your little bundles always have some place safe to play when the sun is at its hottest. Safe Gardening

Remember, when you’re doing any gardening work it’s important to protect your health. Ensure that you wear protective clothing and gloves if appropriate.
