Setting Yourself Up For Successful Decluttering: 3 Tips for Success

Posted on September 11, 2024 By Becky

Decluttering your home can be a therapeutic and cathartic experience, especially if you’ve been putting it off or preparing for a significant change like a house move or renovation.

It’s a universal truth that everyone accumulates stuff over the years for various reasons. Despite our best efforts, not everyone lives a clutter-free life.

So if getting into your closet or ripping that cupboard under the stairs to get rid of unwanted beings is on the cards, these decluttering tips can help you organise your life more smoothly so you don’t end up regretting your life choice 10 minutes in!

Book A Skip or Rubbish Removal

A skip can be the perfect choice for those more extensive decluttering sessions or clearing out. It can even be beneficial if you don’t drive and need to dispose of things quickly. The reality is not everything can be or should be saved, and if you’re cleaning out things that cannot be recycled, upcycled, or reused in their current form, a skip can make your life so much easier when it comes to decluttering.

Alternatively, booking a rubbish removal service means you don’t need to make the trip. A licensed removal service can pick up what you’re disposing of and ensure it’s taken care of. This can be a huge relief, especially for bigger things such as beds or fridge freezers, which you can’t quite manoeuvre into your family car to take to the tip personally.

Plus, having these services booked means you cannot back out or give up, or you’ll be wasting money, so it can motivate you to get it done. And when you do stick to your plan, the sense of accomplishment is truly empowering.

Set Time Aside

Being organised and blocking booking time for a good clear-out can help you plan and prepare so you have a better chance of success. Occasionally, decluttering doesn’t always result in the desired results or an effective clear-out.

If you really want to get stuck in, set a time and prepare your life to get it done. Whether it’s removing distractions from the home, booking child or pet care services so you’re not interrupted, or dragging friends or family around to help you out, book it in your schedule so it can’t be avoided.

Make A Plan

Depending on the time and scope of work ahead of you, creating a plan can help you immensely. If you’re decluttering over a few weeks, making a plan of each room and working through them section by section in small bursts can be effective and allow you to be methodical as you go to ensure everything is taken care of.

If you’re decluttering in one fell swoop over a weekend, for example, a checklist means you don’t overlook anything, and you can give yourself specific tasks to complete to maximise your time. But, whatever your approach is, don’t start without a clear timeline.

Things to include in your plan are;

  • Dividing rooms into sections
  • Purchases to facilitate organisation
  • Bookings or services to help you, like rubbish removal or skips or even cleaning services or contractors for DIY jobs
  • Removal options such as donations, waste or recycling

The more organised you are and prepared for the task at hand, the more successful it will be.
