How To Keep Your Hallway Organised

The hallway is the first place that you and your guests see when walking through your door – and it’s also the first place that clutter builds up. Without an organisation system in place, it can become a chaotic dumping ground for clothes, shoes, bags, mail and other objects. Below are a few tips on how you can turn your hallway into a tidier and more welcoming space.

Set up some shoe storage

A messy pile of shoes can be a trip hazard and it doesn’t look good. It’s one of the most common forms of hallway clutter and it’s easily solvable by investing in some shoe storage. This could be an open shoe rack, a closed shoe cabinet or even baskets for each family member. The important thing is to find a storage solution that is right for your space – for tight hallways, consider tall and slim units. 

Add some coat hooks

Instead of relying on chairs and bannisters to hang coats, consider whether it’s time you added some coat hooks. Find a spare wall in your hallway and install some hooks at adult eye height (if you’ve got kids, consider installing a few lower hooks). Installing two rows of hooks can give you space for a greater number of coats. Just make sure there is enough room between each hook to suitably hang each jacket.

Create a place for keys

Creating a designated place for keys can prevent you having to rummage around in pockets for house keys and car keys (or, worse, having to call out an automotive locksmith because you’ve lost them entirely!). Some people use a bowl on a windowsill or table, while others use a hook. You could even add multiple hooks on the wall for different keys. Such bowls and hooks could also be used for other commonly forgotten or lost essentials like earphones, sunglasses, wallets and lip balm.

Install a wall-mounted mail organiser

Post can end up strewn around the house, making it easy to miss important letters. A wall-mounted mail organiser gives you a designated place to keep your mail. Consider multiple shelves or slots for different categories such as ‘to read’, ‘to pay’ and ‘for reference’. Alternatively, you could add different shelves for different members of the household to keep their mail. To avoid old letters piling up in this organiser, get into a habit of emptying it every so often. 

Utilise the space under the stairs

If your hallway includes a staircase and you can access the space beneath, make sure that you’re using this space wisely. Some homes have in-built cupboards under the stairs, while others have a large recess. This could be a great space for a mini-cloakroom, or you could use this as space for cleaning supplies and sports gear. Whatever you use it for, try to keep it organised so that you’re not just piling belongings there. Some people decide to turn this space into a downstairs bathroom, however this can mean sacrificing storage space within your home.
