Top 5 Industries Where Mobile Payment is Popular

Posted on September 10, 2024May 18, 2026 By Becky

Mobile payments are still a relatively new concept in the market yet it is transforming the conduct of transactionsacross many sectors in unique ways. In the retail, public transport, restaurants, e-commerce, and entertainment industries this technology is reshaping how we pay. In this article, let’s take a look at the five sectors that are at the forefront of mobile payments and their benefits, supported by examples.

1. Retail

Retail was one of the first industries that adopted Mobile payments. New ways of the mobile payment process have been introduced such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung to Pay by mobile, and this granted several benefits for both shoppers and merchants:

  • Convenience and Speed: Consumers are able to make their payments easily and safely without reaching for their wallets or entering their PINs;
  • Security: Biometrics such as fingerprints or Face ID are a more secure way of making payments as compared to credit cards;
  • Customer Loyalty: Accepting mobile payments can help merchants provide their customers with rewards and offers, which in turn enhances the customers’ loyalty to the brand.

The most successful adoption of mobile payments can be observed in the retail sector, especially in the supermarket giants such as Walmart and Carrefour. Some of these companies have already started using mobile payment options and pay-in applications where customers can scan products and pay for them using the application and not stand in long check-out lines.

2. Public Transport

Besides retail, the use of mobile devices for payments has also penetrated the public transport sector. The use of conventional tickets and cards is slowly fading out and being replaced by digital ones. In major cities such as London and Singapore this technological advancement enables the passengers to pay for their travel in a very convenient and fast way.

Mobile payments remove the need to buy tickets in advance or even use money. Mobile applications also have features such as real-time route tracking and delay notifications which make traveling easier and more informative.

A good example of the effective use of mobile payments in public transportation is London’s Oyster system which has recently accepted mobile payments via Apple Pay and other similar mobile billing payment methods, instead of card payments. In New York, there is a similar one-bill mobile pay system OMNY.

3. Restaurants and Cafes

It should also be mentioned that restaurants and cafes have been implementing these mobile bill payments for several years already. People are now using their mobile phones to pay bills, order food online, or pay the bill through their phones because of it:

  1. It is fast, taking only a few seconds, which reduces waiting time and increases table turnover;
  2. There is no need for cash or credit cards;
  3. Many of the loyalty programs are connected with mobile payments and allow you to get bonuses and discounts.

The best example is the largest fast food chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks. It has been a long time since people have started ordering and paying via their mobile phone apps and we are confident that at least half of our readers are using it frequently.

4. E-Commerce

Of course, we can’t help but mention e-commerce. Now it is not easy to meet someone who has never ordered off eBay. It has become such a normal that today’s generation is growing up not knowing that once upon a time things were not this easy and that people had to move from one place to another in order to get what they were looking for.

Mobile payments let you make a purchase right on the street while you are walking in the park. They are also very secure owing to the fact that the information transmitted is encrypted and the user is authenticated biometrically thus minimizing the chances of fraud. Also, the speed of the mobile phone number and payment provides an unparalleled turnover, due to which we as mobile phone users can ultimately enjoy the availability of all possible goods and services because the companies themselves are also interested in this.

5. Entertainment and Events

Mobile payments have significantly transformed the entertainment and events industry, offering unparalleled convenience for ticket purchases, streaming services, and in-venue purchases. Whether you’re buying concert tickets or subscribing to streaming platforms, mobile payments provide a seamless and efficient transaction experience.

Smartbonus.at editor Margaret Kimel notes that mobile payment is rarely used in Online Casinos in Europe, especially in Austria. However, those casinos that have implemented this method have become significantly more popular, reflecting a growing demand for mobile-friendly payment solutions in the gambling industry.

Beyond Online Casinos, mobile payments are increasingly becoming the norm for in-person event purchases, from food and beverages to merchandise. This shift not only enhances the user experience but also streamlines operations for event organizers, making mobile payment a vital component of the entertainment sector’s growth.

Emerging Markets and Future Trends in Mobile Payments

Mobile payments are not just reshaping current industries but are also poised to revolutionize emerging markets. As this technology evolves, we expect to see significant growth in sectors like healthcare, education, and even government services. These industries are beginning to explore mobile payment solutions for everything from telemedicine appointments to tuition payments. As mobile payments become more secure and accessible, their adoption in these new areas will likely increase, making them a standard for financial transactions across the globe. Embracing these trends early will be crucial for staying competitive in the market.

Conclusion

Mobile payments are really shaking things up across various industries, making transactions faster and more convenient for everyone involved. This technology is a game-changer, helping businesses boost customer satisfaction and streamline their operations, all while staying ahead of the curve in today’s fast-paced world.

As more industries hop on the mobile payment bandwagon, it’s clear that adopting this trend isn’t just smart — it’s essential for staying competitive. Whether you’re in retail, entertainment, or any other field, embracing mobile payments can significantly improve both the customer experience and business efficiency.
