Setting Up A Bedroom For Your Teen

Posted on April 21, 2025 By Becky

If your teen needs a room makeover because they’ve outgrown the one that they had, then it’s time to get started on that. For most, it’s going to be a fairly large project and that means it’s going to take quite a lot of time to complete, but don’t let that put you off because that time is going to pass anyway. May as well do something productive with it, right?

Exactly that! Plus, the sooner that you get started with this, the better as it will be done and dusted faster than you think. If you have found yourself stuck, then you’re in the right place to get some advice. Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you’re going to need to get right when setting up a bedroom for your teen, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.

The Right Bed

We’re going to start with arguably the most important part of the whole bedroom – the bed! You want your teen to be comfortable, right? Which means that you want them to have a lovely, comfortable bed. This might mean that you have to spend a little extra cash to ensure the comfort and the fact that it needs to last, but think of it as an investment and it won’t be too hard to justify it.

If you take a look around online, you will find some pretty good prices for small double beds, easily fitting into an average sized room. Try to find something that will match the style of the rest of the room, and the style of your teen. Think about whether a metal frame, wooden frame, or another type of frame would be best for them, and then use this information to find a bed that they’re going to love sleeping on.

Lighting

It’s also a good idea to think about the lighting options in the room. For some people, the main light is more than enough to illuminate the whole room, providing ample amounts of light for them to do whatever they want. However, if you know that your teen is more of a mood lighting person, then you can consider ways that you can add this to their new room.

We advise that you think about getting them a bedside lamp as well so that if they only need a small amount of light, they can get this without turning the lights on in the whole room. A lot of people find that this helps them to wake up gently in the morning, and doesn’t illuminate the hallway outside of the bedroom, waking other people in the process.

Blinds & Curtains

Some people love it when the light streams in in the morning, or later at night during the lighter months. Others not so much. Others like their room to be completely dark when they’re trying to sleep, otherwise they can’t get those hours that their body so desperately needs. It’s important to think about your teen specifically here, and get either curtains or blinds that will suit them best. Black out blinds are a popular choice among those who sleep through the mornings on the weekend, so they are something to consider for sure!

Tech

Next, you should think about exploring the different tech options for your teen’s bedroom. The choice here will usually involve either a laptop, desktop, or a TV, if they are a gamer. If you have money to spare, you can think about purchasing both. Be aware that there are significant differences between each possibility. For instance, if you decide on a monitor – or they demand one – then you’ll need to prepare for the fact that it won’t come with speakers. You’ll need to buy these separately or find them a decent pair of headphones.

Decorating

Finally, speak to your teen about the type of decoration they want in their room. If they are going through a particular teenage stage then they may tell you in no uncertain terms that they want black and only black. However, black is a colour that you will want to avoid for many reasons. It is one of the hardest colours to paint with and can make the room appear very dark, even with the lights on. It might be nice to speak to them about alternatives that can grow with them. This could be skull wallpaper that contains black but isn’t all black. You could also do a feature wall for them, containing wallpaper or two different colours.
