How We Prepared Our Smartphones for a Family Holiday to Japan (And What Actually Helped) Posted on October 5, 2025May 1, 2026 By Becky Understandably, most people aim to bring their smartphone on holiday. When we travelled to Japan as a family, it quickly became clear just how essential ours were. They weren’t just for photos (although we took a lot) – they were our maps, train guides, translators, tickets, and even our way of ordering food when we couldn’t read the menu. It’s not just a luxury you bring along for fun. Your phone holds booking confirmations, contactless payments, and navigation tools. It can book a taxi, help you stay updated on local news, and keep you connected with family during your trip. Most importantly, it helps keep you safe. Being able to share your location, contact emergency services, or quickly search for help if something goes wrong is invaluable. Even something as simple as looking up what to do after being stung by something unfamiliar can make a big difference. Of course, you’ll also be using it to capture memories. Japan is incredibly photogenic, from neon-lit streets in Tokyo to peaceful temples in Kyoto. Preparing your smartphone before you go makes all of this easier. Consider A Disposable Phone Before we travelled, we did briefly consider arriving with a disposable phone. The idea is simple. Keep your main phone safe in your bag and use a cheaper one while out exploring. If it gets lost or stolen, it is not such a big loss. In Japan, we personally didn’t feel the need to do this because it felt incredibly safe, even in busy areas like Shinjuku Station. But if you are travelling somewhere crowded or unfamiliar, it can still be a smart backup option. Clear Out & Backup The Clutter Before our trip, I made time to properly declutter your phone and I’m so glad I did. I had years of photos, unused apps, and random screenshots taking up space. The last thing you want is your phone filling up just as you’re trying to take photos or access bookings. I created a “travel” folder on my home screen with: Maps Booking confirmations Tickets Translation apps Payment apps This made navigating busy places so much easier. When you are trying to find your way through complex stations or busy streets, having everything in one place saves a lot of stress. Plan For Running Out Of Power We underestimated just how much we would use our phones. Between navigation, photos, translation, and travel planning, the battery drained quickly. If your phone struggles to hold charge, it might be worth upgrading beforehand. You can even offset the cost by using services that let you sell my iphone 11 and put that towards something newer. We also carried: A power bank Charging cables in our bags This saved us multiple times, especially during long days out exploring. Pre-Prepare Your Photography Settings Your phone camera’s great, but setting it up before you travel makes a big difference. Before leaving, I: Cleaned the lens Checked camera settings Tested night mode and panorama Adjusted file formats for easier sharing This meant I could focus on enjoying the moment rather than fiddling with settings, especially in places like Fushimi Inari Shrine. Set Loss Prevention Measures No one expects to lose their phone on holiday, but it happens more often than you think. Before travelling, we: Enabled tracking features Secured lock screens Added emergency contact details These small steps can save a lot of stress if something goes wrong. Sort Your Music & Entertainment This is something I almost skipped, but I’m glad I didn’t. We had: Long flights Train journeys Waiting times Having content ready helped a lot. In fact, having an audiobook downloaded and ready to go made delays much easier to handle. Download playlists, videos, or games in advance so you are not relying on data. Make Sure Your Plan Won’t Charge You Before travelling, double-check your mobile plan. Even now, roaming charges can still add up. Look into: Roaming packages Data limits eSIM options Planning ahead avoids unpleasant surprises when you get home. Extra Tips For Using Your Smartphone Abroad Before you head off, a few small tweaks can make a big difference: Turn off unnecessary background activityThis helps save battery and data. Download maps for offline useApps like Google Maps allow offline navigation. Enable data usage warningsHelps avoid unexpected charges. Keep digital copies of important documentsStore passports, insurance, and bookings securely. Use airplane mode strategicallyHelpful if you want to rely on Wi-Fi only. Final Thoughts Travelling to Japan really showed us how important our smartphones are. They helped us navigate, stay safe, and make the most of every experience. When everything around you is unfamiliar, having your phone properly set up makes a huge difference. A little preparation before your trip can make everything run much more smoothly.
