Olivia Rodrigo Cake

How to Make an Olivia Rodrigo Spotify Cake

Posted on July 8, 2025September 8, 2025 By Becky

When your daughter turns 13 and tells you she wants a Spotify Cake with a quote from Olivia Rodrigo on it, you drop everything and make it happen. Because turning 13 is a big deal. It’s the start of teenhood, Spotify streaming on loop, and lots of Olivia Rodrigo. So when my daughter said she wanted an Olivia Rodrigo Birthday Cake with the lyrics “I’ll blow out the candles, happy birthday to me” on top, inspired by her favourite song Teenage Dream, I knew this was going to be a special bake.

If you’ve stumbled across this post while Googling “How do I make an Olivia Rodrigo Cake?” or “Where can I find a Spotify Cake design?” — you’re in the right place. I’m going to walk you through exactly how I made this pastel-piped, ruffle-covered beauty, how to source the Spotify Cake topper, and what tools you’ll need to nail that vintage aesthetic.

Trust me, if I can do it — you can too!

Why an Olivia Rodrigo Cake?

My daughter is fully in her Olivia Rodrigo era. From the moment she discovered drivers license, she’s had her songs on constant repeat. So when we were planning her birthday party, it was a no-brainer that the cake would be themed around her favourite artist.

We’d seen the trend of Spotify Cakes and celebrity lyric cakes all over TikTok and Pinterest – you know the ones, pastel colours, frilly piped icing, and flat printed toppers that look like a Spotify screen. It’s basically the cake version of a mood board.

After scrolling through Ebay and Etsy (which, by the way, is an absolute treasure trove of custom cake toppers), we found a lovely shop that prints edible toppers with Spotify-style layouts. We requested her chosen lyric, and a few days later, it arrived in the post ready to go. It was the perfect finishing touch.

What You’ll Need to Make an Olivia Rodrigo Spotify Cake

Let’s start with the basics. This cake is a four-tier vanilla sponge with vanilla buttercream, frilly Korean-style ribbon icing, and a flat edible topper. Here’s everything I used:

Ingredients (UK & US Measurements)

For the Sponge Cake:

(Makes 4 x 6-inch layers)

  • 400g (3⅓ cups) self-raising flour / all-purpose flour + 2 tsp baking powder

  • 400g (2 cups) caster sugar / granulated sugar

  • 400g (1¾ cups) unsalted butter (softened) / same in sticks (about 3½ sticks)

  • 8 medium eggs (UK) / 8 large eggs (US)

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2–3 tbsp milk (if needed)

For the Buttercream Icing:

  • 500g (4 cups) icing sugar / powdered sugar

  • 250g (1 cup) unsalted butter (softened)

  • 2–3 tbsp milk

  • Gel food colouring

  • Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract

Extras:

  • Edible Spotify cake topper (I got mine from Ebay – just search “Spotify cake topper Olivia Rodrigo”)

  • Piping bags and a petal piping tip (Wilton 104 or similar)

  • Small offset spatula

  • Turntable (optional but makes things easier)

  • Ribbon bows for decoration (not edible, so remove before eating!)

How to Make a 4-Tier Olivia Rodrigo Birthday Cake

1. Bake Your Layers

Preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F) and grease four 6-inch round cake tins. (If you only have two tins, you can bake in batches.)

Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract. Fold in the flour (and baking powder if using US flour) gradually. Add milk if the batter feels too thick.

Divide evenly into your tins and bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden and springy. Let cool completely on a wire rack before assembling.

2. Make the Buttercream

Beat the butter until pale and fluffy. Slowly add icing sugar, mixing on low to avoid a sugar cloud. Add milk and vanilla to loosen the mixture. You want a smooth but pipeable consistency.

Split into two bowls – colour one baby pink and leave the other ivory or off-white.

3. Assemble and Crumb Coat

Stack your cakes with a thin layer of buttercream between each layer. Use a serrated knife to level them if needed.

Once stacked, apply a thin “crumb coat” layer of buttercream all around the cake to lock in any loose crumbs. Chill for 20–30 minutes.

4. Pipe the Ribbon Icing

This is the part that transforms it into that gorgeous Spotify Cake design look.

Fit your piping bag with a petal tip and fill with either the ivory or pink buttercream (I used ivory). Hold the piping tip with the wider end touching the cake and pipe a wavy ribbon motion around the top edge.

Repeat around the base and middle tiers if you like a more layered ruffle look (I did three tiers of piping – top, middle, and bottom).

You can add mini bows for extra cuteness. I used pale pink satin ribbon and stuck them on using a dab of buttercream. Just remind guests not to eat them!

5. Add the Spotify Cake Topper

Once your ruffles are in place, it’s time for the main event — the edible Spotify Cake topper.

Make sure the top of the cake is nice and flat. Carefully lay your edible print on top, smoothing gently from the centre out to avoid bubbles. You can trim it if needed, but most Etsy sellers will size it for a 6-inch or 8-inch cake depending on what you order.

And voila! Your Olivia Rodrigo Birthday Cake is ready to wow a room full of teens (and honestly, impressed parents too).

FAQs: All Your Spotify Cake Questions Answered

Can I make this as a one-tier cake?

Yes! Just halve the recipe and do fewer ruffles. The Spotify Cake design still works beautifully on a single tier — just make sure the top is flat for the topper.

What size is best for a Spotify cake topper?

Most Etsy sellers will offer sizes for 6-inch, 8-inch, or 10-inch cakes. Mine was 6 inches to match the cake size.

How far in advance can I make the cake?

You can bake the sponge up to 2 days in advance. Store wrapped at room temp. Buttercream and decorating should ideally be done on the day or the night before the party.

Can I freeze the sponge?

Absolutely. Bake and cool the layers, then wrap well and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost overnight before decorating.

Do I need special tools for the ribbon icing?

A petal piping tip (like Wilton 104) is a must for those ruffles. A turntable makes it easier, but you can manage without one.

Would I Make an Olivia Rodrigo Cake Again?

100% yes. Not only was it so cute (and surprisingly achievable), but it made my daughter’s 13th birthday feel extra personal. Her friends were OBSESSED with it — one even asked if I take cake orders (I don’t, but I blushed anyway).

The Olivia Rodrigo Birthday Cake trend is such a fun way to combine pop culture with creativity. And the Spotify Cake design gives you so many ways to personalise it — whether it’s for a birthday, album release party, or just a cake for someone who really loves their playlist.

If you’re thinking about making one, go for it! And don’t forget to blast Teenage Dream while you bake.
