Dealing With A Hazardous Career Path: What I’d Do

Posted on June 30, 2025 By Becky

Careers can sometimes be hazardous — that’s a given. But how should you cope if you find yourself working in one of these environments, or in one of the many hazardous materials careers?

That’s the topic of this post today. Today I take a look at what to do if you find yourself in a career situation like this, and how others have managed to thrive, despite the challenges.

Look For Career Alternatives

The simplest option is to just go out and look for career alternatives. Finding another job in a less hazardous industry is often one of the best policies you can commit to, especially if you aren’t particularly attached to the job.

If you are exposed to danger long-term, it can affect your physical and mental well-being, and it’s not worth risking your health over that. Therefore, getting the ball rolling early could potentially save you time in the future.

Manage Your Long-Term Health Risks

Another approach is to manage your long-term health risks to minimize the chances of something from going wrong in the future. If you can control these, it can reduce the risk of symptoms later.

For example, if you work in a noisy environment. Wearing ear muffs or ear plugs can mitigate most of the risk, unless the decibel level is exceptionally high (over 120 decibels). In these situations, you may just need to look for another job if you care about your hearing.

Similarly, you could run into issues, like silicosis or PTSD. Again, these health risks sound strange, but they affect a surprising number of people working in hazardous environments.

Ask For Better Conditions

Depending on what position you are in at work, you might also want to simply advocate for better working conditions. Often, asking is the first step to getting. Employers are often worried about lawsuits, so anything you raise they are likely to take seriously.

Worker advocacy is usually the fastest and easiest way to systemic change. Unless you make adjustments, people are less likely to pay attention to them, putting other workers at risk.

If you can get most workers in your company to sign something that says they are unhappy with conditions, that’s even better. These documents are a great way to get management to listen to your misgivings and act on them.

Don’t just complain, though. Tell management what other companies are doing and how simple finding fixes can be.

Plan For Emergencies

Working in a hazardous career also means planning for emergencies and what could potentially go wrong. Because of this, having a list of contacts on you at all times makes sense. If something does happen, these are the people your colleagues can call.

Most companies maanging hazardous materials careers in hazardous environments and with use emergency drills to train you on what to do next. However, they don’t always practice these, which is why it makes sense to use backups.

Understand Your Rights

Another approach is to understand your rights if you work in a hazardous location. Knowing all the regulations around your job tells you where you stand.

Understanding these is something that takes time but once you internalize it, you’ll find that it comes in handy all the time. You often know immediately if your employer is doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

Regulated employers have to provide safe conditions to workers by law. However, many managers bank on the fact that most staff don’t know or read these.

If you can avoid this, it will make you safer and ensure that you continue to hold your superiors accountable. After all, if you’re working for them, you deserve a safe environment.

career options

Stay Fit

If you work in a hazardous job, it is also a good idea to stay fit and healthy, both mentally and physically. That’s why building a core fitness routine is vital. The healthier you are, the more likely you are to have greater mental clarity and speedier reaction times.

This approach also enables you to avoid errors, something that can lead to serious risk working in hazardous materials careers. If you can avoid accidents by following all the right procedures, you put yourself in a much better position.

To follow this piece of advice, ensure that you’re exercising regularly and practicing mindfulness. Make sure you’re taking the time to look after yourself.

Build A Support Network

Another idea is to build a support network with coworkers and other people who care about safety on the job. This isn’t an action group, per se, but rather a forum where you can discuss how to prioritize safety with others.

For example, you could join workplace safety committees or industry groups. These can help you spot risks and provide the kind of emotional support that’s necessary when working runs the risk of putting your life in danger.

Get The Best Protective Gear

If you can get the best protective gear for working in hazardous materials careers, that can help too. Employers will usually buy you what you need, but it might be lacking in some way or fail to meet the proper safety standards. Therefore, always explore whether options you buy could be better.

For example, you could get an SCBA for your breathing. These are often used by fire fighters, but they come in handy whenever there is a risk of breathing in toxic air.

At the same time, you could also wear physical armor. Again, it has the same effect. ANSI-rated helmets could save your life if you get hit on the head.

Focus On Safety Training

Lastly, it makes sense to focus as much as you can on safety training. The more of this you can conduct, the better off you’ll be.

Proper training matters because it teaches you how to use the supplied equipment and what protocols to follow in an emergency. People who train consistently and do what their instructors tell them to do are far more likely to reduce workplace injuries.

Make sure you have certifications, like the OSHA 10/30. These are useful if you want to protect yourself against specific risks with more confidence. Industry standards can change, so safety qualifications may also adjust.
