Aging Parents: How To Look After Them (And Yourself)

Posted on April 14, 2026April 14, 2026 By Becky

It can be difficult to see one’s parents getting older, but it can be encouraging to know that you’re in a position to provide some help and support as they navigate the challenges that come with aging.

With that said, while the desire to help is noble, the process isn’t always as smooth as we’d like it to be. For one thing, adult children can often be a little too zealous in helping their parents, which can create tension. It can also lead to emotional strain and stress on the child if they’re not simultaneously looking after themselves at the same time they’re looking after their parents.

In this post, we’ll outline some tried and tested strategies that should ensure that both your parents and you receive the care you need to be at your best.

Integrate Help Into Your Routine

Many adult children try to do too much, too fast, and in the process, run the risk of burning themselves out.

It can be a lot better to find ways to gently integrate help into your routine. This not only makes the support you’re providing more sustainable, but also avoids the issue of overwhelming your parents. When in doubt, take a “little and often” approach to helping; cooking a meal here and taking care of shopping there both provide excellent support in a subtle way.

Look At Professional Support

Recruiting professional help can be recommended for two reasons. The first is that home care providers have specialised training that allows them to provide a level of care that far surpasses what you would typically be able to provide on your own. The second is that it can give you the time and space you need to take care of your own responsibilities, without feeling guilty that you’re not looking after your parents. Most care providers offer customised care plans, too, so you can have peace of mind that your parents are receiving the care that’s right for them.

Encouraging the Good Life

It’s in our nature to want to help our parents, but it’s important to remember that the best way to provide help is often by encouraging them to look after themselves. Things like daily exercise and staying social really can make a huge difference to an aging person’s quality of life. It’s just that sometimes, they need a little bit of help to get those things. As such, it can be worthwhile looking at making it easier for them to get exercise, get together with friends, and generally stay connected with the outside world; for example, by offering to provide lifts or looking up exercises they can do on their own.

Take Care Of Yourself

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Ultimately, you’ll be in a much better position to provide expert care to your parents if you’re feeling good within yourself, so make sure that you’re taking care of the basics, which include eating well, enjoying your hobbies, and proactively managing your mental health.
