What to Do if Mental Health Disorders Are Affecting Your Parenting Posted on September 18, 2024 By Becky Life can throw you lemons at any stage in your life. Although you might be able to cope with this if you were on your own, you might struggle to maintain a stable and happy family life for yourself and your children if you are a parent. Then, if mental health disorders are disrupting your life and the lives of your beloved kids, here is what you should do. 1. Look for Residential Programmes Sometimes, one session with a therapist a week is not enough, and you might need to look further afield for more comprehensive care. For instance, if you have a partner or someone else in your life who can care for your kids while you are gone for a while, you should consider booking yourself into a residential program. This is especially the case if you need specialist care, such as if you have an addiction. These residential programs can offer you the concentrated and round-the-clock support you need, ensuring that you can leave at the end of the course feeling happier and more able to be the parent you have always wanted to be. This means you should look around for high-quality and well-recommended residential addiction treatment either close by or further afield. 2. Build a Support Network You might want to be the best parent that you can be. However, this is not always possible, and everyone has limitations. Rather than feeling guilty about these or believing that you have to manage all on your own, you should instead try to build a support network around you. This could include your partner, friends, and family members. Not only could they help you with childcare when you can no longer cope, but they might also be able to provide a shoulder to lean on throughout your most difficult days. Even just having a chat with someone can lift the burden and brighten your mood for a while. You might also look for nurseries and other childcare facilities in your local area that can allow you to take some time for yourself. 3. Speak to Your Children Rather than guarding the situation against your children entirely, if they have noticed your behavior has changed or your mental health issues are beginning to impact their life, you should try to offer them a child-friendly but unpatronizing account of what is happening. You might decide to discuss mental health and give them the appropriate level of reassurance. If required, you might also look into getting therapy for your children, especially if they have become more withdrawn and are struggling to adapt to life with your mental health issue. This can give them a safe space to talk about their own emotions and how they are feeling. 4. Be Soft on Yourself It can be difficult to be kind to yourself when you know that you are affecting your child’s life in a negative way. However, self-compassion is vital for recovery. You would not be so harsh on someone else, so why would you cut yourself down like that? You should take into consideration everything that you have to deal with and be proud of your achievements despite your mental health concerns. You should also take pride in any progress that you make to get better.
