Maximising Your Garden Space

Posted on October 25, 2025 By Becky

Those of us who have them feel very lucky to have gardens of our own where we can hang out in the sun, enjoy the fresh air and watch the birds and bees go about their business, but you know what? Most of us are not using our garden space to its full potential. It’s time to change that, and below you will find some of the best tips to help you do just that and maximise your garden space effectively.

Have a plan

If you want to maximise the space in your garden, then first and foremost, you are going to want to have a plan, a vision for your garden space. Take a look at the space you have, and then work out what you want to put in there, from sun loungers to patios to a play area for the kids. You can then try to work out what will go best where. For example, a play area at the back of the garden away from the house is good because it means balls are less likely to hit the windows and having your garden table by the house is smart as it makes transferring food and drinks from the house easier.

Use all the corners

If there’s a croner in your garden that is empty save for a shrub or two, then you are wasting space! Everything should be used to maximise the potential of the place, For example, the dark corner right at the back of the garden would be a perfect place for one of those custom garden sheds you’ve always wanted that will give you more storage space or provide you with a place to do your hobby while still looking good in the yard or that corner at the front side of the garden might be ideal for a bird feeding station or corner outdoor sofa unit so you can watch the world go by. Use it all, Use it well.

Don’t make anything bigger than it needs to be

Making things bigger than they need to be leads to unused space. For example, if you weant a patio, instead of having it take up half the garden when yo’re only going to put a bistro set on it for the two of you, make it just big enough for you to use it how you want to, then you’ll have more space for a yard for the kids or a flowerbed for you to grow flowers, herbs and veggies. Smaller can be better.

Use furniture that does more

Finally, you are going to want to invest in good garden furniture that not only allows you to relax in the garden in just the way you want but which also helps you to avoid taking up extra space too., For example, a rattan table set that includes built-in storage will enable you to hide away garden cushions, blankets and accessories when you aren’t using them, or outdoor chairs that can also be used as planters when you’re not sitting on them will save you space.

FAQs About Maximising Your Garden Space

1. How can I make a small garden look bigger?
Use light colours, mirrors, and vertical planting to create the illusion of space. Keep furniture compact and multifunctional to avoid clutter.

2. What’s the best way to plan my garden layout?
Start by sketching your space and identifying how you want to use it — dining, relaxing, or growing plants. Place larger items like patios and sheds first, then fill in with smaller features.

3. How can I use corners in my garden more effectively?
Corners are often wasted! Add a storage shed, a cosy seating nook, or a vertical planter. Corner furniture and raised beds also work well in tight spaces.

4. What kind of garden furniture is best for small gardens?
Opt for furniture that folds, stacks, or has built-in storage. Rattan cube sets or benches with hidden compartments are great space-savers.

5. How can I make my garden more functional without losing its charm?
Combine practicality with style — choose furniture that doubles as storage, plant herbs in decorative pots, and add lighting to create a cosy evening space.

6. Do I need professional help to redesign my garden?
Not necessarily! Many garden improvements can be DIY, especially with a solid plan. However, hiring a landscape designer can help if you have uneven ground or want a complete redesign.

Here’s to a garden that does more and works better for you!
