How to Train Pothos to Climb a Wall

Posted on March 19, 2026 By Becky

If you’ve ever admired a wall covered in vibrant green leaves or a cascading vine growing gracefully up a trellis, you know how stunning climbing plants can be. Among the most popular indoor climbing plants is the pothos, a low-maintenance vine that’s perfect for adding life and texture to your home. Here’s how you can create a pothos wall:

What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather a few simple materials:

  • A healthy pothos plant: This is the foundation for creating a successful pothos wall.
  • Command hooks or wall clips: These act as anchor points to guide and support the direction of the pothos as it climbs.
  • Plant ties, twine, or Velcro strips: Used to secure the pothos to the hooks to prevent it from falling.
  • A moss pole or trellis (optional): Provides support that encourages the pothos to grow upward, making it easier to climb the wall.

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

You should start by choosing a wall that receives bright, indirect light. An east-facing balcony wall is an ideal choice because it gets gentle morning sun without being too harsh. Walls next to a south-facing window can also work, but you may need to provide some shade during the brightest hours.

You can also use a vertical grow light to help guide the vines upward. A full-spectrum light works best because it mimics natural sunlight. By positioning it above the plant and adjusting the height and angle, you can encourage the pothos to climb in the direction you want.

Step 2: Plan the Growth Pattern

Before installing any supports, take a moment to decide how you want your pothos to climb. You can train the vines to grow straight upward for a clean, minimalist look, or create decorative shapes such as waves, zigzags, or gentle curves for a more artistic effect. Having a clear plan from the beginning makes it easier to place hooks or clips and ensures your wall display looks intentional rather than random.

Step 3: Install Wall Supports

Once you have your design, install the supports along the planned path. You can use adhesive hooks, wall clips, or small nails, depending on your preference and wall type. Space them close enough to support the vines, so they don’t sag between points.

If you choose to use a moss pole or trellis, secure it firmly in the pot before you begin training. These supports provide a surface for the pothos to climb and can help guide the vines more naturally along the wall.

Step 4: Guide and Secure the Vines

Now it’s time to train the vines. Take one vine at a time and gently attach it to the nearest support. You can use soft plant ties, twine, or Velcro strips to secure the vine to the hook or pole, but avoid tying too tightly so the stem can grow freely.

Follow the natural direction of the vine, avoiding sharp bends, which can damage the plant or slow growth. As the pothos continues to grow, regularly check and adjust the placement of new sections to keep the pattern consistent.

Step 5: Maintain and Shape Regularly

Training a pothos is not a one-time task. Check the plant frequently and guide any new growth along the supports. If vines become too long, uneven, or start leaning in unintended directions, you can trim them to maintain the shape you want.

Pruning also encourages branching, which results in a fuller and more visually appealing wall display. Over time, consistent guidance will help your pothos fully cover the wall in the pattern you’ve designed.

Final Thoughts

Training a pothos to climb a wall is a simple but rewarding project. With the right setup and a bit of patience, you can turn an ordinary plant into a striking part of your home.
