How To Plan Your Spring 2026 Garden Makeover This Autumn

Posted on September 12, 2025 By Becky

Autumn might not seem like the season for garden makeovers, but if you want a blooming, beautiful garden by next spring, now’s the time to start planning. The chill in the air, the softer light, and the natural winding-down of your outdoor space actually make autumn the perfect moment to think ahead. The gardens we admire in April and May don’t just appear overnight. They’re the result of preparation, clear intention, and small decisions made months earlier. So, whether you’re imagining a complete redesign or just want to touch up some areas here are some core things you need to get right.

Autumn Gives You Time To Think

One of the best things about autumn is the breathing space it gives you. Unlike spring or summer, when plants demand constant attention, autumn is slower and quieter. You can walk around your garden without urgency and really take notice of what’s working and what’s not. You’ll see the bones of your garden more clearly. With summer growth fading, the structure stands out. Where the lines are, where shade falls, where something feels off. It’s easier to plan changes now because you’re not distracted by blooms or battling overgrown borders. And let’s not forget the practical side. Many suppliers start restocking in winter, but the serious garden planners are already browsing in autumn. By getting a jump on your plans, you avoid the rush, find better choices, and have time to spread out the work rather than cramming everything into March.

Visualise First, Then Design

Planning isn’t just about what to plant. It’s about imagining how the whole space should feel. A good garden design starts with a clear vision. Not a list of plants, but a mood or idea. Maybe you want to create a relaxed social space. Or a vibrant patch full of colour and bees. Maybe you dream of a quiet corner where you can sit with a coffee and read. Whatever it is, picture it clearly. Look through books, take photos of spaces you love, and sketch, even roughly, what you’d like.

Get To Know The Garden You Already Have

It sounds simple, but many people try to redesign their garden without fully understanding what they’ve got. Autumn is a great time to really get to know your space again. Firstly, test your soil. It’s easier than it sounds and can help you avoid wasting money on plants that won’t thrive. Take note of drainage after it rains. Notice where the sun hits, especially in the morning and late afternoon. Look at what’s already there and ask: is it still working for you? Maybe that overgrown hedge is eating all the light. Maybe a tired fence could be turned into a backdrop for something bold. A good garden makeover often involves improving what you’ve got, not just ripping it all out. And if you’re planning bigger projects, this is the right time to check on practical things. Are there buried cables or drains? Is your existing patio safe? The more you know now, the fewer surprises you’ll hit later.

Outdoor Living Deserves Just As Much Thought

A proper garden makeover isn’t just about plants. It’s about how you live outside. More people than ever are treating their gardens as an extra room, and autumn is ideal for planning that part too. Do you want a social spot for long lunches? A quiet, shaded space to read? Somewhere you can work from when the weather’s nice? Think about your patio or deck. Is it the right size? Does it catch enough sun or too much? Planning now means you can schedule any paving or construction well before spring. Autumn often brings better availability and sometimes even better prices from tradespeople. Furniture matters too. Choose pieces that feel comfortable and last well outdoors, and don’t forget the extras. These are the touches that turn a patio into a living space. And then there’s layout. Even in a small garden, creating ‘zones’ makes everything more functional. Just like indoors, it’s about how you move through the space and how it makes you feel when you’re in it.

Keep A Simple Garden Journal

You don’t need to be a diary person to benefit from this one. A basic garden journal is one of the best tools you can have when planning a makeover. Use it to note what’s growing where, what succeeded this year, what flopped, and what you’d like to change. Keep a list of plants you love, mistakes you’ve made, weather notes, or sketches of layout ideas.

You can also use it to track budget, suppliers, or anything you order. If you’re getting materials from a reputable garden and home supplier, jot down the contact details or quotes, especially if you plan to order again in spring.

Think About Wildlife

Wildlife isn’t a side note. It’s a vital part of a thriving garden. And it’s so much easier to include when you plan for it from the beginning.

Even the smallest garden can welcome birds, bees, butterflies, and hedgehogs. Use native plants and leave seed heads standing over winter for food. If you’re adding water features, a simple pond or even a shallow dish can do wonders. Wildlife brings motion, sound, and life. It makes your garden a far more joyful place to be.

Let The Garden Rest While You Keep Going

Once your plans are in place, let the garden rest. Use winter to tidy, build structures, prep beds, and finalise planting lists. Order seeds, bulbs, and materials early, especially if you’re after something special. This steady prep makes spring far more enjoyable. You won’t be scrambling to source things or making rushed decisions. Instead, you’ll already have your blueprint for spring.

It might not feel like it yet, but spring is already quietly on the way. Every sketch you make, every idea you note, every bulb you plant this autumn is a seed for the garden you’ll love in a few months’ time. Take it one step at a time.
