How to make DIY Wall Prints using Canva

Look on any interiors Instagram feed right now, and I’d bet you the plentiful supply of coins in my little girl’s money box that it will include a slogan print. There are loads of ace ones about though for inspiration, or you can come up with your own that someone from Etsy can make up for you, BUT…. how about having a go at creating your own, using the brilliant design website that is Canva? 

I’ve been using Canva for a while now, for everything from social media headers to YouTube thumbnail design, plus also for marketing material in my other job as a digital marketing manager for a telecoms company. It’s only recently, however, that I had a slight brainwave (steady on!) and thought about designing my own prints for our home. We’re at the stage now in doing up our home where we’re playing the old what-works-best-where game when it comes to prints and photos, and by making your own there is basically zero cost aside from a frame, and it gives you more scope to chop and change and mix it up regularly if you’re prone to getting bored easily. 

Here is my step-by-step guide to making your very own DIY slogan wall art using Canva…

1. First up, pop on over to Canva.com. On the image below you can see that by creating an account, Canva stores all my old projects and designs, so I can go back and play with something at a later date. If you’re looking to start a new project, however, pop on over to step 2.

2. On the top of the page you will see a series of options to start a project. For a typical print in my home, I tend to click on the ‘Poster’ option. 

3. For the purposes of this blog post, I’m going to make a ‘family names’ print, using a blank, white poster template. I love a ‘scripted’ text look, so I’ve selected the free ‘Ice Cream Party’ text option, although there are hundreds to choose from, both free and payable. 

4. The ‘Ice Cream Party’ text will appear on your blank poster when you click on it, but this can be edited to write whatever you like. In this example, I wanted to write each family member’s name, one on top of the other down the poster. 

5. Once I’ve written the names out, I adjust the size so they fill the page and are evenly aligned. You can also change the colour of the text too should you desire, but I’ve kept it black on this occasion. 

6. Now the design is finished it can be saved in my collection, and downloaded for printing. I just use my usual printer with good quality ink, and the print is ready to be framed. As you can see below, I have a few designs on the go that I’ve been playing with and may or may not use! 

…the first ones are up in the bathroom, with a few more to possibly follow in the hallway and downstairs loo!
