Your Checklist for a Better Sleep

Few things are as important to your health and wellbeing as sleep. Not getting enough sleep can have several negative effects on both your body and mind. It can hurt your energy levels, weaken your immune system, lead to problems with your memory, and many others.

But despite how important a good sleep is, many people still don’t get enough. This could be due to something like a sleep disorder, or simply due to their lifestyle. Thankfully, you aren’t doomed to struggle with poor sleep for the rest of your life.

This article is going to go over some helpful things you can do to ensure you can get a better sleep each and every night.

Get a Better Mattress

Arguably nothing is more crucial to how well you sleep than your mattress. If the mattress you use is lumpy, old and uncomfortable, it shouldn’t be surprising that you are having a hard time sleeping. Getting a new mattress can often be all you need to improve your sleep quality overnight.

Be sure to test out a few and decide which type of mattress you like. Also, be sure to consider your sleeping position when deciding which mattress to get. If you’re a stomach sleeper, it’s best if you get a stomach sleepers mattress, and if you sleep on your back or side, make sure to get a mattress that’s best for those positions. 

It is hard to know a mattress after laying on it for a minute or two, so be sure to get one with a generous trial period or return policy.

Take Time to Wind Down in the Evening

Another way to improve your sleep is to take time to relax and wind down in the evening. If you try to sleep right after getting off work, playing a sport, or being out with friends, you may struggle. This is because your body needs to transition from being ready to attack the day, to be ready to sleep.

If you continue to do things that give you adrenaline and stimulate your senses, it can be harder to transition to sleep. You need to develop an evening routine that allows your body the time it needs to wind down, and you will notice you often sleep better and can fall asleep way quicker.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

There are also several foods and drinks that have an impact on sleep, so you need to be careful with what you consume. When it comes to foods, you want to avoid things that are spicy, things that are heavy, and things that are incredibly protein-rich. If you do need to eat before bed, keep it light and relatively healthy. However, for best results, you shouldn’t be eating right before going to sleep.

On the beverage side of things, you generally want to avoid things like coffee and alcohol right before bed. While alcohol may help you fall asleep quicker, it is almost sure to lead to sleep issues throughout the night. As far as what type of beverages can help you relax and unwind after a long day, some types of teas can be a good idea.

By considering this checklist for a better sleep, you can ensure that you have the best sleep possible and don’t need to struggle with being tired every single day.
