What to Do if Alcohol is Ruining Your Life Posted on August 12, 2025 By Becky Whether you are an alcoholic or are bordering on alcohol dependency, a reliance on alcohol can destroy your mental health, your job, and, most importantly, your relationships and family life. If you are struggling to stop your alcoholism in its tracks, here are some of the steps that you need to take to start the road to recovery in motion. 1. Admit You Have a Problem The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a condition to recover from in the first place. Many people go through many years ignoring the issue while it worsens and starts to impact their mental and physical health. The longer this goes on, the harder it can be to find the right treatment for you. Instead of being defensive and pretending that you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, you need to admit that you struggle to drink only a couple of drinks when you visit a pub or drink at home. Once you have done this, the emotional work- and acceptance- can begin. 2. Replace Alcohol with Other Coping Mechanisms Often, people are reliant on alcohol as a way to numb their emotions and protect themselves from the difficulties in their lives. If this is the case, the next step that you need to take is to find healthier coping mechanisms that can take the place of alcohol in your life. These could include meditation, yoga, exercise, and nature walks, starting a journal, or talking about your emotions. What you do not want to do, though, is to replace your reliance on alcohol with another unhealthy coping mechanism, such as binge eating or drugs, as these can have just as poor effects on you. 3. Look at Rehab If you are at rock bottom and you believe there is no way out for you, it might be time to look into alcoholic rehab clinics. These clinics can be perfect if you have tried other solutions to no avail or if you believe that you need 24/7 care and an escape from life to do the trick for you. By staying in an alcohol addiction center, you will be able to focus on your recovery and be surrounded by experts who can help and support you every step of the way. You may also benefit from recreational activities, as well as interacting with peers who are in the same situation as you. 4. Get Talking Therapies However, if the idea of rehab is incredibly daunting for you, and you are not ready to take this humungous step yet, you might consider the range of talking therapies that are on offer to you. You can be referred to these through your personal doctor, or you can self-refer. By visiting these therapists, you will have a chance to talk through your issues and the reasons for your alcohol dependence in a safe and unbiased space, to someone outside of your circle of family and friends. This can help you to avoid any of the feelings of shame or judgment that are common in those who have alcoholism.
