What Responsibilities Come With Bringing Someone New Into The Team?

Hiring someone new can be an exciting new step in your business life. It is a testament to your growth of course (otherwise you wouldn’t be growing), but it also means you’ve invested in the future of your firm. Fresh people can also mean fresh ideas, which can help you direct the flow of your business to become even more competitive. Who knows, the person you hire today might one day replace your role, or run your business as CEO when you decide to go hands-off.

There’s a fair amount of work to do before that point arrives, though. As such, learning what responsibilities come with bringing someone new into the team allows you to start the ball rolling with care.

With that in mind, please consider some of the following advice.

Onboarding & Training

You can usually tell how well a business is run by how their new people are brought in. how much you formalize the process matters, because printing out a 50-page handbook they’ll never read is a bit of a cold start. It’s best to ask what tools do they need, who do they report to, and what does their first week actually look like? Then you can set up a human, understandable approach.

If you can map that out and give them something to hold onto early on, they’re far more likely to settle in quickly and actually do what you hired them to do. That approach also saves a ton of time answering questions later, especially if you can assign them a mentor for their first week or so.

Regulatory Compliance

Remembe that a warm welcome is necessary, but you’ve also a few legal obligations to tick off, and those can change depending on your industry or how the role is structured.

For example, if your new hire will be handling sensitive information or financial processes, then you need to be absolutely clear on data protection rules, security protocols, and how any errors could come back on you. If the possibility of a legal issue is present, such as if a creative employee uses a brand name in promotional material exposing you to legal risk, make sure you have training sessions scheduled as soon as they settle in. Or make it clear ir issues have occurred in the past, such as your use of a fraud solicitor to handle someone who failed to handle their accounting duties beforehand.  This way you can make your standards very clear and train in your best practice also.

Team Introductions & Structural Implementation

Keep in mind that people don’t just slot into place, it’s your responsibility to help them figure out how they fit. That means showing them the team dynamics, clarifying who handles what, and making sure they know where to go if they hit a wall. This is also a good excuse to tighten up your structure a little, so no one’s left questioning what to do, or when to meet parts of the team.
