Top destinations in Thailand for first-time visitors

Posted on September 3, 2025 By Becky

Thailand is a country of contrasts. In one holiday, you can experience bustling cities which thrill the senses, tranquil ancient temples and serene countryside, being active or relaxing as you choose. Wherever you go, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome, making it the ideal destination for first-time visitors to Asia. Discover the best destinations for your holiday and prepare to be enchanted by the beauty, culture and heritage of this extraordinary country.

  1. Bangkok

Bangkok, the captivating capital where chaos and calm coexist, is the best starting point for Thailand holidays for first-time visitors, wherever you choose to go afterwards. The city buzzes with energy, with vendors crowding the pavements selling fresh food and flowers and local street food delicacies like spicy noodle soups and fragrant mango sticky rice. Towering skyscrapers sit beside traditional temples like the spectacular Wat Pho, home to the giant Reclining Buddha.

Don’t miss the vibrant Chatuchak market, one of the largest in the world, or a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River to get a different view of the city. If you’re looking for a bit of luxury, head to one of the many rooftop bars offering stunning panoramic views which are especially enchanting after dark. Bangkok is the perfect introduction to a country that’s both modern and deeply traditional.

  1. Chiang Mai

After the business of Bangkok, a trip to Chiang Mai in the northern mountains is a breath of fresh air. Founded in the 13th century, this charming city was the capital of an ancient kingdom and today gives you the chance to explore Thailand’s past and how it informs its modern-day culture at a relaxed pace.

Wander narrow lanes lined with old wooden houses, fragrant flower markets, and cafes serving the best Northern Thai dishes. One of the highlights here is the stunning temples that dot the landscape, like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep which sits atop a mountain offering sweeping views of the city below.

If you’re keen on experiencing the countryside during your holiday, Chiang Mai is also the gateway to incredible treks through lush jungles hiding remote villages and spiritual waterfalls. Especially if you’re travelling with children, take the opportunity to meet elephants at one of the ethical sanctuaries where you can feed, bathe, and learn about these majestic creatures in an environment that prioritises their welfare.

  1. Phuket

For many, Phuket represents the quintessential Thai beach getaway, although the country boasts endless sensational coastal spots. Known for its picture-perfect wide white-sand beaches and clear waters, it immediately puts visitors in holiday mode and has a beauty that will linger in the mind long after you’ve left.

Kata and Karon are prime spots if peace and privacy is the aim of the game. Here you can dip in warm, calm waters undisturbed and wander the bays hand in hand. Patong Beach is the place for nightlife, with lively bars and beach restaurants offering mouthwatering fresh seafood dishes and international favourites.

For an unforgettable experience, take a boat trip to the nearby Phi Phi Islands, where you can snorkel in pristine coral reefs and admire the dramatic, jungle-clad cliffs. Whether you’re an adventurer or prefer to soak up the sun with a cold drink in hand, Phuket has something for everyone.
