Things to Consider When Moving into a Brand-New House

brand-new house

While moving into a new house is very exciting, it can also be stressful and overwhelming at times. Here are a few things to consider when moving into a brand-new house to make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Do a Thorough Inspection

The first thing you should do when you move into a brand-new house is to walk around the whole property and thoroughly inspect everything. This is best done while the house is still empty and before you have started moving furniture and other things in.

Look for any potential problems or damage in the house that might not have been evident in the viewings. Check that any repairs or maintenance that were agreed upon beforehand have been carried out and that anything that was agreed upon to be included is present. This is also a good time to check that any sockets, appliances and switches are all working as they should be. A good new build business in Virginia such as Roanoke manufactured homes will ensure all the above is carried out.

Deep Clean

Whether you are moving into a new build property or one that another family has just moved out of, it is worth doing a deep clean before you start moving your things in. Although the house should have been thoroughly cleaned before you move in, you can never be sure of the standard to which it was done. It is easiest to do a really deep clean before all of your furniture and things are in the way, so consider cracking on as soon as you get there. Of course, there is always the option to hire a professional service and this could even be done before you move in.

Change the Locks

Another important thing to do as soon as possible after you move into a new house is to change the locks. Even if you know or trust the previous owners, there is no way of knowing who else may have a set of keys to your property. Make it a priority to change the locks on all of the external doors and windows in your house and have new keys cut. This is a fairly inexpensive job and one that can be done quickly, ensuring you have peace of mind after you move in.

Make a Plan

Although you will have some idea about where all of your furniture is going to go prior to moving in, once you are in the house you will have far more time to have a proper look around and determine where you are going to put all of your things. It is a good idea while the house is still empty to make a plan for how you are going to arrange your things. If you have a plan in place beforehand, it will be far less stressful when you go to actually move everything in. A detailed plan will also help you to get everything in place much quicker, so you can start enjoying your new home sooner.

Don’t Forget the Exterior

As well as doing a thorough inspection of the exterior of the house, ensure you also have a good look round the outside spaces of your new property. As with the inside, check for any potential problems or damage, and that everything that should be included has been. This is also a good time to make sure the garden is in the shape you want it to be. Consider laying new garden turf, planting borders and potentially installing a patio or decking area before you move all of your garden furniture in. By doing this beforehand, you will ensure you have a garden that is ready to enjoy much quicker and without the hassle of having to move your things back and forth.

Set Up Your Utilities

When moving into a new home, make sure that all of your utilities are set up as close as possible to your move in date and that all payments are arranged. You do not want to be in a situation where you move into a new home and find you don’t have running water or electricity. Take some time before you move in to ensure that everything is in place, then when you arrive you can do a quick check to ensure everything is in order. By doing this early, you will save yourself a lot of potential stress when you are just getting set up.

Further to this, while doing your first look around of your new house, take some time to locate the fuse box, water valve and any gas and electricity meters. By doing this first thing, you will know where these important things are should you ever need to locate them; don’t wait until something goes wrong to find the fuse box or water valve!

Moving into a brand-new house doesn’t have to be stressful. Hopefully these ideas will help you to stay relaxed and efficient when moving into your brand-new home.
