At some point, you’ve probably had the chance to drive a fast car out on an empty highway, but there is a better way to get your speed fix!

Now many race tracks offer race car drive experiences that anyone can sign up for and feel the speed! This is how you can get a real feel for the way the pro drivers push their cars to their limits and give you a taste of the glory of real racing!

Once you have experienced the thrill of race car driving as a passenger you know you are going to want to get behind the wheel yourself! But before you go for it you need to learn the best techniques from the experts! You will want to get your ‘racing line’ just right to make sure you are taking the shortest route through a corner while you are maximising speed and remaining safe. This requires you to plan ahead to hit it in the sweet spot! So, let’s start there!

The Racing Line – This is the optimal line or path that maximizes your speed while minimizing sharp turns so you can be the one driving the fastest lap on the track. The racing line is where the experienced drivers place their vehicle and you can ask one to draw it for you or even show you how it’s done by driving it for you at low speed. The line can be complicated, and there’s a learning curve to go with making the curve! Here are some terms to know:

Approach – Before you arrive at a corner you need to approach it from the best possible position, the point where you line up the entry point in a straight line before turning into the corner.

Braking point – This is the place you need to begin to brake before you reach the corner and it should almost always be done in a straight line.

Entry – This is where you begin to turn into the corner and be thinking about the apex so you can plan ahead on when to turn.

Apex – The inside of the corner where there is usually a curb or ripple strip to reinforce the track’s edge and to discourage drivers from going off track.

Exit Point – You have returned to the outside of the track and have begun to accelerate beyond the apex.
