This is usually a mountain of cushions, lots of fairy lights, scented candles all over the house, etc. The instant impression is that we’re now surrounded by cosiness. However, once you bring these elements into your own home, the room still doesn’t quite feel the same. It may be cluttered or a little bland, depending on the overall look and feel you’ve developed in your space. What’s going wrong here? Why “Adding More Stuff” Does Not Equal Cosy One of the largest myths surrounding creating a cosy home is that it is achieved through more stuff. More throw pillows, more decorative items, more knick-knacks. While each of these elements can contribute to creating a cosy atmosphere, they will ultimately detract from the comfort of the space before you can even begin to enjoy them. When every surface in the room is filled with something, there is no opportunity for visual reprieve; your brain will continue to be engaged in some way, even if you like the appearance of the busyness. Physical Comfort vs. Visual Comfort This question will forever change the way you approach designing a comfortable space. How does your physical body feel in this room? The beauty of a space does not necessarily translate to comfort. Even though a room may look lovely, it can cause tension and discomfort in your body if the chair is too low, the carpet curls up under your foot, or the room is consistently cold. Temperature also plays a significant role in creating a comfortable space. Many people believe that cosy is a winter-only aesthetic and completely overlook the basic necessities of temperature control. Insulation, draft stoppers and proper heating (including modern gas fires) greatly impact the level of comfort you experience in a space. When your physical body is relaxed, the space becomes more inviting. Designing to Support Your Lifestyle, Not Only to Create an Instagram-Worthy Photo There is a quiet misconception that every room in your home should look like it was staged for a magazine photo shoot. Reality is that real homes evolve and adapt to changing circumstances. School bags, laptops for work, laundry, exhausted parents… These are all aspects of living that cannot be avoided. Design for these realities instead of trying to fight against them. Create “drop-off” areas in your spaces to accommodate daily tasks. Install hooks to hang headphones, baskets to hold blankets, and trays to store remote controls. By giving clutter a designated area to collect and recover, your space will instantly look more intentional and will remain so. Sound also needs to be considered. A cosy home is not simply visually appealing; it is also an auditory environment. Incorporate soft materials around areas that tend to produce loud noises, close doors to create quiet spaces, and incorporate soothing background music to block out external noise. Your nervous system will respond to these stimuli more rapidly than it would to any new piece of furniture or decor. Ultimately, the most inviting homes are not the perfectly designed spaces; rather, they are the ones that demonstrate kindness to their inhabitants. If you prioritise comfort, lighting, flow and warmth in your space, the “cosy” look will follow as a natural consequence.
