Sustainable Shopping Practice – Buying Second Hand

Posted on June 30, 2022 By Becky

Looking to become more sustainable in your life? Now is the time that everyone needs to take action and there are many ways that you can lead a more sustainable lifestyle to reduce your environmental impact. One of the best ways to do this is to buy items second-hand – in addition to preventing waste, this also lowers the demand for items that are made in a non-sustainable manner. Of course, it is a great way to save money too! So, what are a few items that you can buy second-hand?

Second-Hand Clothing

Buying second-hand clothing has become a major trend in recent times with the rise of apps like Depop and Vinted. It is incredibly easy to browse and buy second-hand clothing online, which can help people to save a huge amount of money while reducing waste. Fast fashion is bad for the environment, but by purchasing second-hand clothing you can do your part while also making big savings (you could also make some extra cash by selling unwanted clothing online).

Used Cars

Many people buy used cars because it allows you to save a lot of money, plus you can get more for your money compared to buying new. Buying used is also better for the environment by reducing waste and lowering demand for the manufacturing of new cars. If you decide to buy used, you must always make sure that you visit and see the car in person before buying. If you are looking for an Audi, browsing used Audis in London, for example, will be cheaper than buying new.

Furniture

The furniture industry can be very wasteful with people simply throwing away items that they no longer need. Fortunately, the second-hand furniture market has flourished in recent times with people selling (or even giving away for free) furniture online at platforms like Gumtree, eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Buying second-hand furniture can help you to make big savings, find vintage and interesting pieces as opposed to mass-produced stuff and reduce landfill.

Electronics & Tech

Electronics and tech such as laptops, TVs and cameras can be hugely expensive, but you can make big savings and reduce waste by purchasing second-hand. As with used cars, you will want to check the condition first to make sure you are getting a good deal.

Kids Items

Parents will be pleased to hear that you can buy all kinds of kids’ items online, including cots, prams, toys and even clothes. You can make big savings while reducing waste by purchasing second-hand items for your kids and this is a much more sustainable option.

These are a few of the best products to buy second-hand that will help you to lead a more sustainable lifestyle while also saving money.
