Tips for Reconnecting with your Faith after a Challenging Time

Posted on May 14, 2026 By Becky

If you feel as though it’s been a very challenging time for your faith and you would like to try and take steps to stop this from being the case, or if you know that you need to try and make sure that you’re not actively working against your faith by making bad decisions, then this is the guide for you. Here you will find out what you can do to try to connect with yourself once again.

Be Honest

The first thing you need to do is try to be honest and open with yourself. You need to talk to God about how you are feeling, even if you just do it in your own mind. Prayer doesn’t need to be polished, and God will always welcome any questions you may have. If you can keep this in mind, then you will find it easier to not only feel more at ease, but also to make sure that you’re not missing out on anything that could be holding you back from connecting with your faith again. If you can keep this in mind, you’ll go far.

Return to Scripture

You don’t need to drive into a long reading plan. If you want to help yourself, then you should start out with a single verse each day if you can. If you do this, then you can connect with the raw emotion and hope, which will help you a lot. Of course, faith is not meant to be lived alone either. Whether you are working within a small group or whether you are dealing with a trusted friend, you do need to try to rely on others so you can feel more supported.

Look for God

If you want to look for God, it’s a good idea to look into various local organisations. Sites like https://meliormundus.com/ are great for this, and you would be surprised at how much it could help you to not only feel more connected to things but also to make sure that you are not missing out on the real sense of community that often comes with being able to rely on people for support. If you can join an organization, then this will help you to emerge stronger, and it will also help you to make sure that you are actively taking steps to support your faith even during tough and challenging times.

Give Yourself Grace

Another thing you need to do is try to give yourself a bit of grace if you can. Sometimes it may be that you are expecting too much of yourself, and this can result in you being under pressure. Sometimes, when you are under so much pressure, you may find it even harder to make the changes you need, which is the last thing you need when you are genuinely trying to reconnect with your faith and ultimately make choices that help you to be the best version of yourself. Forgive yourself, and make sure that you give grace moving forward.

Small, Everyday Habits That Help

Reconnecting with faith rarely happens all at once. More often it’s a slow rebuilding, made up of small decisions repeated over time. If grand gestures feel out of reach right now, these smaller habits are a gentler starting point.

  • Set aside five quiet minutes in the morning. Before the day gets busy, even a brief pause to sit in stillness, offer a simple prayer, or read a single line of scripture can anchor the rest of your day differently. It doesn’t need to be structured or long to be meaningful.
  • Keep a gratitude journal. Writing down three things you’re grateful for each day is a simple practice with surprisingly deep effects. It gradually shifts attention toward what is present and good, which can make it easier to feel God’s hand in everyday life rather than only in the dramatic moments.
  • Pay attention to the ordinary. Faith has a way of showing up in quiet, unremarkable moments: a conversation that arrives at exactly the right time, a feeling of unexpected peace, a stranger’s kindness. Noticing and acknowledging these small things builds a kind of attentiveness that strengthens connection over time.
  • Be consistent rather than intense. Ten minutes of honest prayer every day will generally do more for a struggling faith than an occasional hour of intense effort followed by a long gap. Consistency builds trust – with God and with yourself.
  • Limit comparison. It’s easy to look at others whose faith appears steady and certain and feel that your own doubts disqualify you somehow. They don’t. Doubt has always been part of faith, and most people who appear certain have had their own seasons of struggle.

When Faith Feels Far Away: What Might Be Underneath

A drift from faith is rarely just about faith itself. It’s often connected to other things happening in life: exhaustion, grief, disappointment, a sense of unanswered prayer, or simply the relentless pace of modern life leaving little room for quiet reflection. Recognising what might actually be going on underneath is often the first real step toward addressing it.

If you’ve been through a painful season – a loss, a difficult relationship, a period of serious stress – it makes sense that your relationship with God might have been affected. Spiritual disconnection can sometimes be a form of self-protection, or a response to feeling let down. Being honest about that, as uncomfortable as it might feel, tends to open more doors than pretending it isn’t there.

It’s also worth noting that reconnecting doesn’t mean returning to exactly where you were before. Faith changes as people change, and what it looks like to engage with God at this point in your life may look different from what it looked like ten years ago. That isn’t a failure. It’s growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to go through periods where faith feels distant or difficult?

Very. Periods of spiritual dryness, doubt, or disconnection are described throughout scripture and are a recognised part of the faith experience across virtually every Christian tradition. They don’t mean your faith has failed or that you’ve done something wrong. Many people find that these seasons, difficult as they are in the moment, ultimately deepen rather than diminish their faith once they come through the other side.

How do I pray when I don’t know what to say?

Honestly and simply. Prayer doesn’t require a particular structure, vocabulary, or length. Telling God that you don’t know what to say, or that you’re struggling, or that you feel disconnected, is itself a form of prayer. The Psalms are full of raw, confused, and even angry expressions directed at God, which is a useful reminder that there is no emotional state that puts you outside the reach of honest communication with him.

What if I’ve been away from my faith for a long time?

The length of the gap doesn’t change the availability of reconnection. There is no waiting period, no requirement to explain the absence before you can return, and no minimum standard you need to reach before engaging again. Starting small, whether that’s a quiet prayer, reopening a Bible, or attending a single community gathering, is always available to you regardless of how long it’s been.

How can community help with reconnecting to faith?

Being around others who are actively living out their faith provides both practical support and a kind of gentle accountability that’s hard to find alone. It also offers perspective: hearing how other people navigate doubt, struggle, and spiritual dry spells can reduce the isolation that often makes those experiences harder. You don’t have to be in a settled or confident place to show up. Most genuine faith communities are far more familiar with uncertainty than they might outwardly appear.

What should I do if I have serious doubts about my beliefs?

Take them seriously rather than trying to push them away. Doubt that is engaged with honestly tends to lead somewhere more solid than doubt that is avoided. Reading, asking questions, talking to a trusted pastor or spiritual director, and being willing to sit with uncertainty for a while are all healthier responses than either pretending the doubts aren’t there or concluding that their presence means faith is impossible. Many people find that working through genuine doubt produces a faith that is more considered and ultimately more resilient.
