Looking After Your Mental Health While Juggling Family Life

Posted on May 11, 2026 By Becky

Trying to balance family life with your own mental health is hard work.

Amidst school runs, work deadlines, dinner on the table and the never-ending pile of laundry… self-care falls to the wayside. And here’s the kicker:

When your mental health slips, everything else slips with it.

The good news? You can take small, simple steps every day to take care of yourself – without leaving behind the people who depend on you.

Here’s how…

What you’ll find inside:

  1. Why Family Life Drains Your Mental Health
  2. The Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
  3. 6 Practical Ways To Protect Your Mental Health
  4. When To Reach Out For Professional Help

Why Family Life Drains Your Mental Health

Family life is wonderful. But it’s relentless.

You’ve got work, kids, spouses, bills, school plays, doctors’ appointments… do we even need to go on? They all chip away at your mental bandwidth.

The statistics support this. 65% of working parents surveyed experienced burnout and that burnout is strongly correlated with depression and anxiety. That’s almost 2 in 3 working parents.

Pretty alarming, right?

Throw the expectation of being the “perfect parent” on top of an already full plate, and things can spiral fast. That’s why so many parents start looking into managing depression and finding professional depression counseling services early. Depression doesn’t care how busy you are – if anything, a packed schedule makes it easier to ignore the warning signs.

And here’s what most people don’t realise…

Taking care of your mental health is not selfish. It’s the one thing you can do that’s best for your family. You can’t pour from an empty cup – and your kids see more than you realize.

The Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Parents are good at recognising their children’s distress. Not so much their own.

You brush it off as “just being tired” or “having a rough week.”

But sometimes it’s more than that.

Here are the warning signs you should never ignore:

  • Constant exhaustion — even after a full night’s sleep
  • Losing interest in things you used to love
  • Snapping at your kids or partner over small things
  • Trouble sleeping — or wanting to sleep all the time
  • Feeling numb or disconnected from your family
  • Changes in appetite — eating too much or too little

These are not bad days. They are messages from your brain that something must change.

And depression is more common than you think. The prevalence of depression among adolescents and adults age 12 and older increased from 8.2% to 13.1% from 2013–2014 to August 2021–August 2023. That’s a huge jump in just 10 years.

So if you’re seeing these in yourself… You’re not alone and you can do a lot.

6 Practical Ways To Protect Your Mental Health

Caring for your mental health isn’t about a week-long retreat or hours of meditation. Most of the best practices are small, simple actions you can do daily.

Here are 6 that actually work.

Carve Out 15 Minutes Just For You

Just 15 minutes. That’s it.

Wake up before the kids, take a long shower, sit in your car after work before you go inside… it doesn’t matter when. What matters is that this time is yours.

No phones. No emails. No “quick” tasks.

This brief moment of silence is allowing your nervous system to reset itself. In the long run, those 15 minutes are accumulating into a more serene and present you.

Move Your Body Every Single Day

You don’t need a gym membership or a 5am workout routine.

A walk around the block, 20-minutes. Dancing with your kids in the kitchen. Stretching while the kettle’s boiling. Exercise eases endorphins and reduces stress hormones – and it’s one of the most overlooked mental health tools.

The key is consistency. A little bit every day is better than a big workout once a week.

Talk About How You Actually Feel

This one is hard for a lot of parents.

Many parents are so accustomed to being “the strong one”, “the fixer”, “the ‘everything is fine’ parent”. But holding it in is unhelpful.

Find just one person you trust – partner, friend, sibling – and share how you really feel. Not the filtered version. The honest one.

Set Boundaries With Your Time

Saying “no” is a mental health superpower.

You don’t have to volunteer at every school function. You don’t have to host every family party. You don’t have to answer work emails at 9pm.

Try this: Choose one thing you say “yes” to because you feel guilty and start saying “no” instead. See how much better you feel.

Sleep Like It’s Your Job

Sleep is non-negotiable.

Sleep deprivation causes your brain to be unable to control emotions. Everything is more difficult. Minor issues seem catastrophic. You yell at the people you care about.

Try for 7-8 hours, establish a wind-down routine, and leave your phone in another room. Your mental health will thank you.

Limit The Doomscrolling

Scrolling social media late at night isn’t relaxing. It’s draining your battery.

Measuring your chaotic real life against everyone else’s highlight reel is not great for your mental health. Put time restraints on yourself. Uninstall the apps for a week. See how refreshed you feel.

When To Reach Out For Professional Help

Sometimes self-care isn’t enough. And that’s okay.

If you’ve been having a rough time for weeks, if everyday tasks feel unattainable, or if you’re experiencing dark thoughts – please seek professional help. There is absolutely no shame in this.

Depression is so common that 39% of adults who have experienced a major depressive episode were left untreated. Millions of people suffering without having to.

You can start with:

  • Your family doctor – they can refer you to the right specialist
  • A licensed therapist – talk therapy works wonders for many people
  • Support groups – talking to others going through the same thing
  • Crisis hotlines – if you need help right now, call 988

Reaching out doesn’t make you a weak parent. It makes you a smart one.

Bringing It All Together

Looking after your mental health while juggling family life isn’t easy. But it’s doable.

To recap:

  • Notice the warning signs early – don’t brush them off
  • Take 15 minutes a day for yourself
  • Move your body, talk it out, and sleep enough
  • Set boundaries and protect your energy
  • Reach out for professional help when you need it

Your family needs you to be well. And you deserve to feel well. Start with one small thing today — and build from there.
