The Great Phone Drawer Clear-Out (And What I Wish I’d Known Sooner)

So, we’ve been having a bit of a house declutter lately (as you do when you’re trying to convince yourself you’re an organised adult), and I stumbled across THE drawer. You know the one. Every house has one. Ours lives in the kitchen, wedged between the takeaway menus we never use and a random assortment of Allen keys, and inside it were no fewer than four old phones, two tangled chargers that fit nothing we currently own, and an iPad so old it still had my Freddie’s toddler fingerprints all over the case.

I had a little moment of “why on earth have we kept all this,” followed swiftly by a much more interesting moment of “hang on, is any of this actually worth something?”

Turns out, yes. Quite a lot, actually.

Old Tech Isn’t Just Clutter, It’s Cash

I’ll be honest, I always assumed once a phone was a few years old it was basically worthless. Like it just… stops mattering the second a shinier model comes out. But that’s not really true at all. A phone that still switches on, still has a decent screen, and hasn’t been dropped in the bath (RIP, one of ours, several years ago) can still be worth a genuinely surprising amount.

The bit that gets me is how many of us just don’t bother finding out. We assume it’s more hassle than it’s worth, shove it back in the drawer, and repeat the cycle a year later with the next upgrade. Guilty as charged, clearly.

Sell My Phone, Or Just… Leave It There Forever?

Once I’d had my little drawer epiphany, I did what I always do and went down a bit of a rabbit hole googling “sell my phone” at 11pm (very on brand for me). And honestly? It’s a lot more straightforward than I expected. Most services will give you a price on the spot once you tell them the model and condition, no faffing about with listings or waiting for randoms to message you on Facebook Marketplace asking if you’ll “do it for £20 less mate.”

For anyone else who’s been putting it off purely because it sounds like effort, it genuinely isn’t. Ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you’re double-checking you’ve backed everything up (please back everything up, I learned this the hard way with a lost photo album once and I still think about it).

What About the iPad Gathering Dust?

The iPad in our drawer was the real surprise for me. I’d sort of mentally filed it under “too old, not worth bothering,” but a quick check said otherwise. If there’s an old iPhone knocking about too, it’s worth checking that separately, since a trade in iphone deal is often quicker to sort than you’d think, especially if it’s a model that’s still fairly popular.

Basically, don’t assume. Check first, THEN decide it’s not worth it, rather than the other way round.

A Few Bits Worth Knowing Before You Do It

A little bit of prep goes a long way here, and I definitely didn’t do all of this in the right order the first time I sold a phone (rookie error, learn from my mistakes):

• Back everything up first. Photos, contacts, all of it. Do this before you even think about resetting anything.
• Do a proper factory reset. Not just deleting a few apps and calling it a day, an actual full reset so nothing personal is left on there.
• Take out the SIM and memory card. Ask me how I know this is easy to forget.
• Check the condition honestly. Cracked screen, dodgy battery, whatever it is, be upfront about it. You’ll get a fairer price and it saves any back-and-forth once they’ve actually seen it.
• Get a couple of quotes before committing. Prices genuinely vary, and it takes minutes to compare.

So, What Did We Do With Ours?

Long story short, most of the drawer got sorted in an afternoon. A couple of the phones weren’t worth much (RIP bath phone, you tried your best), but the newer one and the iPad both fetched more than I expected, which basically paid for a very nice takeaway and a little something for the kids. Silver linings and all that.

If there’s a drawer like ours lurking somewhere in your house, it’s honestly worth having a nose through it properly rather than just shoving it shut again. You might be sitting on more than you think.
