Locals in Hunter Valley Turning to New Payments Platform for Quick Transfers

Posted on December 3, 2025 By Becky

A growing number of residents and small businesses in the Hunter Valley are starting to use PayID, a real-time payments system that allows fast bank transfers using only a mobile number or email address. With most Australian banks and financial institutions supporting the platform, PayID is becoming a regular part of everyday banking, especially for those looking for simpler and quicker payment options.

Launched nationally in 2018 as part of Australia’s New Payments Platform (NPP), PayID was designed to make bank transfers more convenient. Instead of relying on traditional BSB and account numbers, users can receive payments by linking a phone number or email to their bank account. This setup reduces the chance of error, and in most cases, the money arrives within seconds.

More people are now looking for new ways to move their money around without cash. This is why PayID is becoming a popular option across transaction types, including but not limited to personal payments, small businesses, and informal sales. For those in regional areas like the Hunter Valley, where access to physical banking services can be limited or delayed, the real-time nature of PayID provides a practical alternative.

In the online domain, where payment speed is important, PayID is becoming a popular deposit method on various entertainment and gaming platforms, particularly online casinos. For many of the top online casinos that offer PayID, it has helped to improve these platforms’ payment and transaction options. Allowing online casino players to deposit their money instantly, securely, and often free of charge.

For example, with the use of PayID, it is possible to pay from one’s bank account without having to register for a new service. It also functions seamlessly with the mobile banking platforms of the banks that have partnered with it. PayID users therefore have the same protection and security measures, like multi-factor authentication, transaction alerts, and fraud monitoring, that Australians are used to.  While PayID has been available for several years, adoption in regional areas has picked up more recently, in line with changes in digital banking behaviour.

In addition, small businesses across New South Wales now display their PayID details for payment, often replacing or supplementing EFTPOS for low-value transactions. The system is being used by sole traders, tradespeople, local service providers, and hobby sellers, especially in cases where card readers are impractical or cost-prohibitive. PayID’s instant confirmation allows sellers to verify payment on the spot.

There is also an increasing amount of community organisations, clubs, and schools making use of PayID for fundraising, fee collection, and other transactions. The ability to track and verify payments quickly is beneficial in reducing administrative overheads and allows these organizations to reach a wider audience.

Despite the benefits, not everyone is using PayID yet. Some people remain cautious due to a lack of familiarity, while others are simply used to older methods. However, banks have been actively encouraging the switch, and setting up a PayID typically takes only a few steps within a bank’s mobile or online platform.

There are also occasional compatibility issues. Not all banks support PayID in exactly the same way, and not all types of accounts are eligible. That said, the vast majority of everyday banking customers in Australia have access to the feature through their regular institution.

Another consideration is awareness. While urban centres have been quicker to embrace real-time payments, rural and regional communities are catching up as digital banking becomes more central to everyday life. For many, the appeal of faster payments and fewer mistakes has helped make PayID a practical alternative to older systems like BPAY or traditional bank transfers.

PayID isn’t replacing other forms of payment, but it is becoming an option people trust to handle quick transfers, without the fees or delays associated with some other methods. As more locals try it out for themselves, it’s likely to continue increasing in popularity as part of the Hunter Valley’s everyday banking habits.
