How To Avoid Being Scammed And Losing Money After A Car Accident

Posted on December 3, 2025 By Becky

Money is usually the second thing on your mind following a car accident – the first being everyone’s health & safety, of course! If you’re unlucky, then an accident like this can be a financial disaster and leave you with lots of money to pay. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do about this. For instance, if you were categorically at fault, then you’ve not always got a leg to stand on.

That being said, there’s a surprisingly high number of fraudulent claims happening after car accidents. Some people will even willingly involve themselves in an incident to try and claim compensation – or sue you. And then there’s the issue of trying to get money from another driver when they’re at fault. People will go out of their way to scam you out of your compensation, so you have to be alert.

It’s stressful, but here’s how you avoid being scammed and losing money after a car accident:

Film Everything That Happens

This should actually start before any accident happens. Get yourself a dashcam so you’re always recording what’s going on in front of you. It may even help to get one pointed behind to see if a driver bumps into you. You now have genuine video evidence, making it difficult for any driver or pedestrian to make false claims against you.

Also, the footage helps you get maximum compensation if you’re not at fault, preventing people or insurance companies from scamming you out of what you deserve. Keep filming on your phone after the crash, too – this helps you document anything the other party says or does and can be very useful when putting a case together.

Work With A Lawyer & Private Investigator

Go straight to a lawyer after a car accident; don’t bother trying to make a claim through your insurance provider. Ironically, they’re the biggest crooks of all and will do everything within their power to pay you as little as possible.

A lawyer helps you put the best case forward and can argue in your favour if another driver tries to make a claim against you. Adding a private investigator to the party makes things even better – they can conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and the opposing party, seeing if they’re making false claims.

For example, someone can claim they broke their leg or got severe whiplash because you crashed into their car. A private investigator may catch them playing football a day or so after this claiming, which obviously indicates there’s nothing wrong physically. It’s not something a lot of people think about doing, but working with a proper investigator alongside your lawyer will help you avoid losing money when you’ve done nothing wrong.

Those two tips are genuinely all it takes to avoid being scammed after a car accident. No matter if you’re at fault or completely innocent, other people will try their best to get money out of you – or stop you from getting what you deserve. Use these tips to improve your financial standing and prevent serious strife from hitting your bank balance.

How to Maintain Your Glass Breaker Tool

Posted on September 25, 2024November 7, 2024

The glass breaker isn’t a tool you’ll deploy every other day unless you have deplorable driving skills or misfortune simply appears to follow you around (pun intended).
