Is Renting a Viola the Right Choice? Pros, Cons, and Considerations

Posted on November 18, 2024 By Becky

Your decision whether to rent or buy a viola is a significant choice that affects both your musical journey and finances. This is why understanding the advantages, drawbacks, and considerations can help you make a wise decision that matches your circumstances and goals.

Pros of Renting a Viola

Affordability

When you rent a viola, it offers a great and reasonable point into the world of string instruments. Instead of paying thousands and hefty upfront for a quality instrument, you can start playing with light monthly payments, usually from $30 to $60. This approach makes quality instruments available to students and beginners who might otherwise be discouraged by high purchase costs.

Flexibility

One thing we like is that rental programs provide flexibility, which is very ideal for growing students. Most rental shops offer size exchange programs, which simply allow you to switch to larger instruments as they develop physically. This feature eliminates the need to repeatedly purchase new instruments during crucial learning periods.

Maintenance and Repairs

When it comes to maintenance and repairs, it’s something you’ll definitely aim for. Most viola rentals agreements include maintenance coverage, protecting you from unexpected repair costs.Their maintenance ensures the instrument remains in optimal playing condition, with services like bridge adjustments, string replacements, and bow rehairing often included in the rental package.

Cons of Renting a Viola

Long-Term Costs

Yes sure, monthly payments are initially attractive. However, long-term rental costs can exceed the purchase price of a comparable instrument. After several years of consistent payments, you might spend more than if you had bought the viola outright, without building equity in the instrument.

Limited Selection

Rental inventories often feature standard student models, which might not satisfy advanced players seeking specific tonal qualities or craftsmanship details. The available selection may be further limited by local availability and current rental stock.

Considerations When Choosing to Rent

Skill Level

If you’re a beginner, you can benefit from renting since you can access high-quality instruments while you’re still in the process of determining your commitment. However, for advanced players, you might just prefer buying higher-quality instruments that will match your skill level since you might find yourself hoping for instruments every now and then.

Duration of Use

You also need to consider how long you plan to play the viola. Is it just for months or years? If you’re a short-term player, you should definitely rent but if you’re planning to pursue it for years, purchasing might be more economical in the long run.

Future Plans

Your future plans are also an important factor to keep an eye on. When evaluating this, you need to see your musical aspirations. If you’re a student planning to pursue music seriously, you might need to invest in your own instrument. Likewise, you need to consider whether you might want to switch to a different string instrument in the future.

Conclusion

You can definitely benefit from renting a viola. However, if you want to be a wise musician, you might need to consider the pros and cons before you decide to rent. You need to look at both sides of the coin and weigh which would be better for you. Is it to rent or just buy? By considering your goals and defining your future plans, you can surely arrive at a wise decision when it comes to renting or not.
