How To Recharge And Reset When Life Feels Overwhelming Posted on December 30, 2024June 15, 2025 By Becky Life can sometimes be relentless – it’s like you’re on a treadmill and it doesn’t matter how fast you run, you can’t quite keep up. There will be deadlines piling up, your phone buzzing non-stop, and trying to get any me time feels like an impossible dream, and it can be a real problem when it all feels too much and overwhelming. However, when that happens, recharging and resetting is absolutely vital, and if you’re looking for ways to do it, keep reading to find out more – it could make all the difference to your physical and mental health. Recognise The Signs One thing to remember is that before you can reset, you’ve got to know when it’s time to actually do it – you’ve got to know what the signs are. In that way, you can take time out or do what you need to do before things get too bad and you feel even worse. You’ll want to look out for things like feeling constantly tired, being irritable, or maybe even being a bit mentally foggy. On top of that, you might find it’s hard to enjoy the things you usually love or you might not be able to focus. All of these things are just some of the signs that your body and mind need a break, and it’s wise to listen to them. Spotting when you’re overwhelmed is the first step to getting balanced again, so don’t just keep trying to plough through and telling yourself it’s okay – it’s not. You’ve got to take the time you need to recharge or you’ll feel awful and bigger problems could arise. If you have passed this point, because many of us do, and now you’re struggling to reset yourself, try not to panic, you’re not alone. Plenty of people have been there before and people will be there again in the future, but you’ve got to work your way through. Slowing down is going to be your best starting point here as then you can look at your options. It might be worth looking into mental health treatment in some capacity depending on how much you’re struggling, or maybe just talking it through with someone you love will help for now. Either way, write down all of these signs that led you here so that you know for next time. Simplify Your Schedule When life feels chaotic, it’s very often because you’ve packed too much into your day and you’ve not really accounted for what you can mentally and physically do – and that’s a problem. So why not take a hard look at your commitments and ask yourself what you can cancel or let go of to make yourself a much better, safer, more doable routine. The best thing to do is to prioritise what really matters and learn to say no to things that drain your energy or that you’re only saying yes to in order to please other people. If you’re able to simplify your schedule it’s going to give you space to focus on what’s important and it gives you the chance to wind down and relax, meaning that the things you’ve kept in your schedule are more enjoyable and less of a chore. Fuel Your Body When you’re running on empty – which is what over-doing it really amounts to – it’s easy to forget (or intentionally ignore) the fact that you still need to eat and drink properly. You’ll most likely grab something quick and unhealthy like sugary snacks or fast food, but the problem is that even if these things make you feel full at the time, that feeling won’t last for long, and they won’t usually give your body the nutrients it needs to be healthy. In the end, you’ll just feel worse than ever because you’ll have no energy but you’re still doing too much. If you’re able to focus on nourishing your body with healthy food that gives you energy (and ideally energy that actually lasts), you’ll feel so much better and you’ll be more productive too. Stay hydrated as well, and never underestimate the power of a real, homemade meal made with fresh ingredients – it could be precisely what your body is craving. And if you want something to complement your nutrition, some people find that adding full spectrum cbd oil to their routines is a fantastic way to improve focus and to make them more relaxed – it’s certainly something that’s worth looking into if you need a little boost. Embrace Nature There’s something so amazing and beautiful about just stepping outside and breathing in the fresh air, especially if you’ve been cooped up inside staring at a screen for days (or even hours) on end. You can make your time outside in nature anything you want it to be, from a long hike to a short walk in the park or even just sitting in your garden if that works for you – and that’s great because it means you don’t have to have much time to spare to get the most out of being in the fresh air. Add together fresh air, natural light, and the sounds of nature, and you’ve got all the ingredients to perfect relaxation and a great way to unwind. Leave your phone behind if you can (or put it on silent and hide it away in a pocket so you’re not tempted to look at it if you do want to take it with you) because going outside is the perfect time to disconnect with screens and take in what’s around you – it’s probably exactly what you need. Declutter Did you know that the space you’re living or working in plays a massive role in how you feel? And it can actually make a difference to your mental state? It’s true – being in a cluttered environment that’s messy and chaotic might not seem like a bad thing on the outside, but inside it could be what’s making life more overwhelming for you, so it’s well worth taking a little time to declutter and make things more comfortable and more healthy for you and those around you. You don’t have to go all in right away – you can start small, like organising your desk or clearing out just one drawer in your desk or filing cabinet. Do that once a day in different areas, and over time, you’ll have a much neater space that’s better for your mental health, and that can’t be a bad thing. Reassess Your Goals There are many reasons why you might feel overwhelmed, but one of them could be that you’re not reaching your goals – in fact, you might feel further away from your goals than ever before. That’s why it’s important to take a moment to revisit your goals, whatever they might be, and see where you are – are you heading in the right direction? If not, it’s time to reassess. That might mean adjusting what you’re doing, or it might mean adjusting the goals themselves – you need to think about what you really want, and that’s going to help you work out the right thing to do. Once you’ve looked at things again and made the necessary changes, things should be a lot smoother and a lot less overwhelming because you’re not fighting against yourself or your chosen path anymore – what a relief that will be!
