How to Make Your Home Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Posted on November 2, 2024 By Becky

Making your home energy efficient sounds like something only the rich can afford, right? We often picture major upgrades—solar panels, triple-glazed windows, getting a brand new roof, and eco-friendly heating systems, that seem out of reach for the average household budget. Truthfully, these are way too expensive for the average person; seriously, they are in the tens of thousands! Sure, the whole point is to pay off in the long term, but it takes the long term to save up for these types of things.

But the reality is that you don’t need to be wealthy to enjoy a warm, efficient home. Believe it or not, there are options out there that even middle and low-income people can afford. But what exactly? Well, here’s what you need to know!

The Small Changes That Make a Big Difference

When it comes to saving energy, the small things can have a big impact. Yes, seriously! So, simple actions like adding draught excluders around doors and windows, using thick curtains in winter, and insulating pipes might not seem like much, but they help keep warmth in and cold out.

These small investments are relatively inexpensive but can lead to noticeable savings on your energy bills. Plus, sealing gaps is something everyone needs to do, and it’s not expensive either.

Making the Most of Free Government Schemes

Alright, so one big misconception is that you need to fork out large sums of money to make any real impact on your home’s efficiency. However, in the UK (at least here, but it is hard to say about the rest of the world), schemes like the ECO4 do exist.

The ECO4 scheme is specifically meant to help lower-income households make their homes more energy-efficient. It actually focuses on things like wall and loft insulation and heating upgrades for qualifying households.

There are Affordable Upgrades That Add Up Over Time

They were mentioned earlier, but they do deserve to be mentioned again. You have energy-efficient windows, fancy heating systems, and solar panels that all make a huge difference, but they aren’t the only ways to boost your home’s efficiency. Sure, sometimes, if you’re really lucky, you can get these at a steep discount, but it’s fairly rare.

But with that said, insulation is one of the most effective ways to keep your home warm, and it doesn’t always require a full roof overhaul either. Even switching to LED light bulbs and a smart thermostat is fairly cheap and even these have long term benefits.

It’s Also About Embracing Sustainable Habits

Another way to create a more energy-efficient home without breaking the bank is by adopting small, sustainable habits. You don’t really need to spend any money when it comes to these.

So, using appliances like washing machines and dishwashers only when they’re full, turning off lights when you leave a room, and hanging clothes to dry instead of using the dryer are all easy ways to save energy. They’re super easy too! While sure, habits alone won’t magically make your home efficient, they do help you control your energy usage and costs.
