How to Choose Kid-Friendly Internal Doors That Blend Style and Safety

Posted on January 4, 2025 By Becky

Designing a home involves picking the right inside doors, which people might not always think about first. However, if you have kids running around the house, you should give this decision some extra thought.

An interior door does more than split rooms. It adds safety, style, and practicality to your home. Discovering doors that suit children but also look great does not have to be difficult. Here’s a clear guide to assist you.

1. Safety First, Always

Kids can be adventurous (and, let’s be honest, sometimes downright chaotic). That’s why safety should top your list when choosing internal doors. Look for doors with soft-close hinges to prevent tiny fingers from getting pinched. Some doors even have magnetic or slow-closing mechanisms that gently glide shut.

Another thing to consider? Glass. While glass-panelled doors may appear beautiful, they may not always suit homes with young children. If you do want to go for glass, choose toughened or laminated safety glass to prevent it from breaking into sharp pieces. Some safety glass has a frosted finish that disguises fingerprints and smudges, which can be very helpful for parents.

2. Durable Materials Are Your Best Friend

Kids can be tough on everything, doors included. That’s why durability matters. Solid wood doors are strong and can withstand years of slamming, banging, and general wear and tear. If solid wood seems expensive, engineered wood or composite doors provide good alternatives. These options last long, cost less, and come in many finishes to match your taste.

Painted or veneered doors also deserve attention, but pick finishes that resist scratches and are easy to clean. Crayons, markers, and sticky fingers are definitely bound to happen at some point.

3. Easy Maintenance is Key

Kids can be messy at times. Doors that are simple to clean will make your life a lot easier. Try to find surfaces that resist stains and scratches. A quick wipe with a damp cloth should be all that is needed to keep them looking fresh.

4. Child-Friendly Handles and Locks

Handles and locks often get overlooked, but they play a vital role in selecting doors safe for children. Choose rounded or lever-style handles to prevent injuries and avoid sharp-edged ones that might harm youngsters.

Regarding locks, consider options suitable for your family. Bathrooms and bedrooms need locks with emergency release systems to quickly open the door from outside if necessary. Families with toddlers should think about childproof doorknob covers to stop unsupervised explorations.

5. Style That Grows with Your Family

Just because you’re focusing on kid-friendly features doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Look for timeless designs that can adapt to your family’s needs over the years.

If you want a little extra flair, consider panel designs, shaker-style doors, or even barn doors. Just make sure the style complements the rest of your home.

In Conclusion

Choosing the right interior doors for a family home means balancing safety, durability, ease of maintenance, and style. With thoughtful planning, you can find doors that are functional, child-friendly, and timelessly elegant.
