Home Styling – Living room lighting

Posted on September 2, 2015 By Becky

It’s fair to say that our living room has been a bit of a labour of love since we first moved into our home 3 and a half years ago. It’s the one room in the house that I’ve struggled to ‘get right’ and to get the feel that we want in. After much deliberating over new sofas (that, thank god, I am still happy with nearly one year on, tis a miracle!), I have been careful to not rush other purchases. I am taking my time styling the room, and aiming to select pieces that are not going to go out of fashion after a season, yet are still kinda quirky, and most importantly, that we love and make us smile when we enter the room.

For me, lighting is really important, and surprisingly difficult to do ‘well’: You want lighting bright enough to enable you curl up in your comfiest sofa and read a good book, yet not so bright on an evening that it creates an un-relaxing vibe. As well as our ‘big light’ hanging in the room, we have been on the hunt for a couple of decent table lamps for a while. When BHS contacted me and asked if I would like to review something from their homeware, I immediately knew that I would be heading for the lighting section on their website! I was pleasantly surprised at how many of the lamps I would have happily given room space for, and may well be back to take a look at some for our new loft bedroom.

In the end I selected the fabulous ‘Hooper’ table lamp, which comprises of a wooden plinth with a clear glass cloche, and a antique style bulb cap. What I love about this is although it’s classic design, it really works still in a more modern setting, and certainly doesn’t look dated.

I love how it looks on my late Nan’s mid-century table that Adam and I have inherited!

The lamp is easy to care for and just wipes clean, although I have to say as someone with young children you need to be a bit careful due to the glass and because it can get quite hot.

Other than that I’m super-chuffed with it, and it’s one more step to building our perfect living space!

To be used with a bayonette cap fillament bulb, also available at BHS.

Thanks so much to good old BHS for letting me loose in their lamp section, and for gifting me this lighting beauty!

Oh I love it! For what it’s worth, I always think it’s worth taking your time over these things. It’s always the things I choose in a hurry that I regret later. Your living room is looking fab!

I am thinking about this very subject this week! I am taking our sitting room very slowly too. Like you I have the sofas but yet to even get the walls right – we’ve inherited some nice but not at all my style or colour wallpaper on a feature wall. Lighting definitely needs to be inviting but not too dim for my aged eyes…xx

Gorgeous lamp, my husband picked the lamps in our living room and (don’t tell him) I’m starting to really hate them. He loves them and they weren’t cheap but at some point we are going to have to have the conversation that they need to go! x
