First-Day Nursing Mistakes That Will Make It Difficult To Keep Your Career Alive

Posted on April 27, 2026April 27, 2026 By Becky

It takes a long time to build a career in nursing, which means that, by the time your first day finally comes, you will have gone through a lot to get here. Now, you’re finally on the brink of getting started. But did you know that there’s still plenty of time to make fatal mistakes that could kill your career before it’s fully realised?

That’s bad news, and it’s something you’ll want to avoid at all costs. But what are the most fatal first-day mistakes a nurse can make, and what can you do to avoid them? Keep on reading as we find out.

# 1 – Assuming You’ll get a Uniform on the Day

No uniform? No problem. Or is it? In truth, most UK healthcare settings will provide workers with uniforms, but assumption is always a bad idea, as this won’t necessarily be the case for you . Even if it is, arriving on your first day with no uniform is always bad news.

Avoid that by simply getting your facts straight before you begin. If your employer provides scrubs, then make sure you collect them in advance so that you arrive on the ward properly dressed. If a uniform isn’t provided, checking ahead will give you plenty of time to invest in your own trusted healthcare scrubs to ensure that you impress on the day.

# 2 – Arriving When Your Shift Starts

We know what you’re thinking – how can arriving when your shift starts be a bad thing? Isn’t it good to be punctual? Well, you’re definitely right there, but you’re missing one key fact: arriving on time for your first day is akin to arriving late.

Why? Because your shift start time is the moment when you need to be on your ward, already getting stuck in with work. And that’s just not how things will play out unless you arrive early. Of course, you won’t need to do this for every shift, but on your first day, it’s always a good idea to arrive at least half an hour before you’re due to start. This gives you time to find your ward and have a walk around before you need to get going.

# 3 – Failing to Ask Questions

A surprising number of us try to avoid asking questions on our first shift, and this is especially true for nurses who have spent years studying. But there will inevitably be moments when you’re unsure during that first shift. And, if you stay quiet, you run the risk of making foolish and potentially fatal mistakes.

Instead, you need to be that curious trainee when you start. If you have any doubt about systems, medications, or protocols, always speak out. Far from being annoying, this shows that you’re curious, switched on, and keen to do a good job. And the results will speak for themselves.

A first nursing shift is a major event in your career. Throw yourself and your prospects a lifeline by avoiding these fatal mistakes when the time comes!

Extra Tips for Your First Day in Nursing

Get familiar with the ward layout
Take a few minutes to learn where key areas are, such as medication rooms, equipment storage, and emergency exits.

Bring a small essentials kit
Items like a pen, notebook, watch, and hand cream can make your shift easier and help you stay organised.

Introduce yourself to the team
Building good relationships early helps you feel more comfortable and makes it easier to ask for help when needed.

Double-check everything
Whether it’s patient details or medication, taking a moment to confirm information can prevent serious mistakes.

Stay calm under pressure
Your first day may feel overwhelming, but taking a breath and focusing on one task at a time can help you stay in control.

Look after yourself during your shift
Stay hydrated, eat when you can, and take breaks. You perform better when you take care of your own needs too.

Reflect after your shift
Think about what went well and what you can improve. This helps you grow quickly in your role.
