How to Build a Career in Healthcare Posted on November 7, 2025March 7, 2026 By Becky There’s never really a right or wrong time to change your career. While most people settle into a career after leaving full-time education, you’d be surprised at how many people make changes later in life, especially after having a few jobs after school or university. Sometimes it can take a little time for us to know what career we actually want to pursue. This can also apply to the healthcare field. The great thing about healthcare is that there are always jobs available. So, if you want to build a career in healthcare, all you need to know is where to start. Education and Qualifications The first thing you’ll need is the right education. Most jobs in the healthcare industry require some kind of specialized training, whether you’re working in administration, as a nurse, or as a doctor. You may need to go to a specific college or school to get the degree you need for your career. This doesn’t mean that, once you get a nursing degree, a medical degree, or a different qualification suitable for a technician or another job in this field, your training stops. You can take on additional healthcare courses online to help you develop your skills and your career. Some of these courses are good for brushing up on your skills, and some will provide certifications or qualifications to help you move up in your career. As well as extra courses, you will also need to keep on top of your regular training to make sure that you’re still qualified and registered to work in your field. Finding Work in Healthcare So, you’re educated and qualified to work in healthcare. What next? There are a few different ways to find work in the healthcare industry. Some people are able to find work while they’re training, as many healthcare professionals are placed in the field as they train. Depending on your performance and how you fit in, you could walk into a job as soon as you qualify. Keeping an eye on physician positions available can also help you understand the opportunities that may open up once you complete your training. Whatever you decide on your vocation, you could branch out to other fields like psychology or counseling, earning a master’s degree in counseling or becoming a licensed therapist means finding a job in mental health services or private practice could be a great option for you. Additionally, networking with professionals in the industry and attending job fairs can also help you secure a position in healthcare. Other options involve exploring a healthcare job board to find job opportunities in your area that suit your skills, or you could look into nearby hospitals and facilities and ask if they’re hiring. Taking Care of Yourself One of the reasons why the healthcare industry has so many job opportunities available is that it can be a difficult field to work in, physically, emotionally, and mentally. So, if you do find work in this field, you need to make sure that you also take care of yourself. Between long shifts and sometimes difficult or upsetting patient cases, it can be easy to become burnt out. It’s important to avoid burnout as much as possible so you can find a good balance between your career and the rest of your life. Always make sure to take any time off that’s available, and if you are able to take personal time at other times, take the opportunity to do so. Keep an eye on your mental and physical health and, if it helps, talk to a therapist about some of the added stresses you might go through.
