Books are one of the most important things to remember when packing your bags for a trip abroad. Perfect for long flights, lazing by the pool, or just relaxing after a long day of sightseeing, books provide entertainment, escape, and calm, peaceful moments wherever you end up. Choosing the right book to take with you on vacation is important, but so is choosing how you plan to read it. Nowadays, it isn’t just about grabbing a paperback from your shelf. From e-readers to audiobooks, there are a number of different formats that help you travel with books more conveniently. So next time you are getting on a plane or boarding a cruise, here’s a breakdown of what travel book format might make the most sense for you.

Ereader: Convenience and Versatility

E-readers like the Kindle or Nook have changed the way we consume literature, and arguably their biggest impact has been on travel. Keen readers can now slip an entire library into their carry-ons, making it possible to take thousands of books with them on vacation. This is a godsend for longer trips, as well as making difficult decisions about what you want to read a thing of the past. They are lightweight, don’t take up space in your luggage, and have a bunch of features that make reading more accessible. There are, of course, downsides to e-readers as well. They need to be charged, and they are vulnerable to things like water and sand, which can be tricky if you are looking for a book to read by the beach.

Paperback: Tangibility and Simplicity

The tactile, sensory experience of turning the pages of a physical book is hard to beat, which is why, for some, paperbacks remain the ideal travel book option. Your paperback can’t run out of battery, can be shared or passed around with your fellow travelers, and will even survive being dropped in the pool! Physical books are bulky, however, and will limit the reading options you can bring with you, making them more appealing for shorter trips.

Audiobook: Hands-Free Reading

Audiobooks offer a very different ‘reading’ experience, but one that can be brilliant for travelers. You can enjoy your favorite stories hands-free, which is great for multi-tasking or engaging in vacation activities like hiking or sunbathing, or for anyone who struggles to read due to motion sickness. Audiobooks do mean another gadget to bring with you and keep charged, however, and some people don’t like to rely on a narrator’s interpretation of their favorite characters.

Audible: A Comprehensive Audiobook Platform

Audible is Amazon’s audiobook service and is perfect for audiobook lovers who want a wide range of options for their travel reading. A subscription opens up a vast library of titles, making it possible to find almost any book you want and giving you a stunning choice for your trip. Audible is an extremely user-friendly platform too, with a load of features to make the listening experience more enjoyable and easy to manage. It does mean that you are reliant on a decent wifi connection, however, which might be fine in your hotel room, but less useful for listening by the beach or in a remote mountain retreat.

Choosing the best reading format for your travel book needs ultimately comes down to personal preference. For some, the physical experience of reading a book might trump everything, while others might prefer the choice and freedom that an e-reader provides. The great thing about the modern world is that reading on the go has never been easier, so find your format and dive into a good book wherever you go on your travels!
