Cyprus Immigration Requirements: Guide and Tips

Posted on December 18, 2025 By Becky

Moving to Cyprus sounds like a sunny dream that starts with buying a ticket and ends with… a pile of paperwork. Yes, life on the island is worth it, but to stay here legally, you have to run around a bit. Local rules can seem complicated, and when you first read the official Cyprus immigration requirements, it can feel a bit overwhelming.

But don’t worry. If you do everything in turn, there is nothing terrible there. For most people who aren’t planning to buy an expensive villa right away, the easiest option is the so-called “pink slip”.

What is a temporary residence permit in Cyprus?

This document is popularly called the “pink slip”, although now it is already an ordinary plastic card. Officially, it’s a Cyprus temporary residence permit, often referred to in guides as a temporary residence permit Cyprus option. What does it allow you to do? The right to live in Cyprus all year round (more than the usual 90 days on a visa), enjoy the sea, and live here full-time. The main condition: you do not have the right to work for local companies.

This is an ideal option for freelance IT professionals, remote workers, or simply those who want to live in the warmth. Basically, the tourist visa you arrived on turns into a one-year residence permit.

Residence permit in Cyprus for non-EU citizens

If you do not have a European passport, the rules are a little stricter. The process for getting a residence permit Cyprus for non eu citizens really comes down to one main question: “Do you have enough funds to support yourself?” The migration service wants to be sure that you will be able to provide for yourself and will not go to ask for help from the state.

Therefore, before submitting your application, honestly calculate your budget. Costs in Cyprus vary a lot from city to city. For example, people often ask about living expenses in Limassol, as it’s one of the most expensive cities on the island. Rent and living there cost more than in Paphos. Also, do not forget about utilities.

Check the cost of electricity in Cyprus in advance so your summer air-conditioning bills don’t come as an unpleasant surprise. These costs must be taken into account when showing your income to the officer for approval of your permit and residency.

Checklist for Cyprus Temporary Residency

In order for your application to be successful, you need to collect a specific package of documents. Most often, problems arise due to simple inattention.

Here’s a simple list of what you need for Cyprus temporary residency:

  • Money in your account. You need to show regular incoming transfers from abroad (what you earn there and spend here).
  • Bank guarantee. You deposit a certain amount (about 550 euros) into an account and have it blocked as a guarantee. This is in case of deportation (a simple formality).
  • Lease agreement. You have to live somewhere, and the agreement must be official.
  • Medical insurance. Regular, which covers visits to the doctor and hospital.
  • Certificate of no criminal record. A clean history from your country (with translation).
  • Medical tests. Once you’re in Cyprus, you’ll need to do blood tests and a chest X-ray.

Housing and approval details

Nothing will work without an address. The migration service needs your lease agreement, certified by the tax office and the local district head (Mukhtar). Finding a rental where the owner is willing to sign all the necessary documents is one of the most important steps in your residency application.

This is where the Myspace real estate Cyprus platform can really help. The company’s specialists understand that the client needs not just an apartment, but a base for obtaining documents. Therefore, MySpace selects housing options with cooperative landlords who are ready to provide all the signatures required by the migration office.

Summary

Keep in mind: getting your application approved can take a long time. You can wait for a card for several months. But there’s no need to panic.

As soon as you submit the documents and receive a receipt, you are on the island legally. You can live your normal life, take your children to school, and just wait for your permit. The key is to be honest, show your real income, and you shouldn’t have any problems. Cyprus is very straightforward when it comes to transparency and honest paperwork.
